My head was spinning as we walked back into the house, the words of my parents’ neighbour, Steve saying ‘he’s dead’ were playing over and over again in my head. I only spoke to Dad eight or so hours earlier. How the hell did it get to this?

My father is dead, my sister is in jail and Trent’s unthankful at his second chance after almost throwing away his life. What a fucking disaster. I was hurt, I was angry, I was confused and we had an absolute nightmare on our hands.

Amanda and I needed to get up there as quickly as possible but there was no way we were going to make the last flight out of Sydney. We rang Amanda’s parents to see if they could come and get Jane. They responded immediately. Brian and Kim are amazing people. They are so understanding, loving, reliable and they welcomed me into their family from day dot, unconditionally.

How do you explain all of this to an 11-year-old? Less is more. I sat blankly on the couch with tears running down my cheeks as Amanda delicately revealed to Jane that Russell had been in an accident and died. Hearing that just smacks you across the face, I felt like I wanted to vomit but my major concern was for my mother.

We booked flights for first thing in the morning and then I rang Steve’s phone to try and get a hold of Mum.

‘Mum, how are you?’ I asked cautiously.

‘Oh Trav, he’s gone, Russ is gone, they just blew him away, the police killed him,’ she said breaking down.

‘I thought he had shot himself and was bleeding out, I heard five-gun shots, when Andy didn’t arrive, I called the police, thinking they could save him, but they killed him,’ she spluttered.

‘Where are you now?’ I asked.

‘I’m up at Steve and Karen’s. The police just keep asking me questions, they are so cold and have been so rude to me, ever since they arrived this afternoon, they acted all gung ho and now look what’s happened, they killed him. I just want to tell the investigators to fuck off and leave me alone, they’ve done enough damage already. They took my phone, they won’t let me back into the property. I begged to see Russell but they wouldn’t let me, I heard the shots Trav, I heard the shots that killed him. I was walking towards the front gate. I just want to hold him, tell him that I love him,’ Mum said distressingly.

‘What happened this arvo, why did it come to this?’ I asked.

‘He’s been struggling with everything. He was frustrated by the lack of justice for Amy and devastated by Trent’s situation. He thought he might have bowel cancer as well, so many things Trav, it all just came to a head this afternoon. The lack of communication with lawyers, no answers, he felt so helpless.
