âThe lawâas you call itâhas no jurisdiction over the Academia,â the chancellor said. âAnâTeela is here as a personal favor; she is consulting, not arresting.â
âSo you only have to be terrified of the angry Dragon sitting behind the chancellorâs desk,â the Hawk added, her grin returning. Her eyes, however, remained blue.
Robin then explained what he had seen, starting with Ravenâs sour attempt to findâand destroyâhiding places, Killian in tow, and ending with events that occurred after the window had either exploded, melted, or been deserted by glass that Raven had indicated was possibly sentient.
âSentient?â the chancellor said before Robin could finish the sentence that contained that word.
âI didnât understand it, either, and Ravenâs recoveringâshe doesnât spend a lot of time with other people, and after the window fell apart, Starranteââ As the chancellor cleared his throat, Robin backtracked. ââArbiter Starrante preserved what Raven calls metal bits. He seemed to think they were at least as important as preserving Terrano.
âBefore you ask, I have no idea what Terrano was doing. I only know he thinks he was trying to protect Killian. Youâre going to have to ask him, but I donât think heâll be able to come to the office anytime soon.â
âOh, he wonât,â Teela said. âSedarias was terrified that weâd lose him, and he forgot the cardinal Sedarias rule: do not make her worry. Iâd be surprised if heâs back at the Academia before the week is outâbut Terranoâs hard to cage. And to be fair, given the two Barrani deaths, Terrano is worried about Serralyn and Valliant; heâs not just loitering on the grounds because heâs bored.â
âFor which I am grateful,â the chancellor added. âMy imagination is not up to the consequences of bored Terrano.â
âIt really isnât, and weâre getting sidetracked. Iâd like to return to sentience. And to one other comment you said Raven madeâwhich Serralyn did hear.â
âWhich one?â
âDonât let the glass shards get in your eyes.â
Robin nodded. âThat would be common sense for any glass, though.â
âYes. Is that why she said it?â
âNo. No, I donât think so.â He exhaled. âThis isnât the first time sheâs found glass.â
Teela nodded. âNo. Serralyn saw her pick up a piece of glassâa larger pieceâfrom beneath the arms of a dead Barrani student. Until she did, no one could see it; after, it was simple glass.â
âNot simple,â Robin said. âKillian couldnât touch it. His Avatar triedâit didnât go well. Butââ He frowned. âItâs hard to think of it as a problem that only affects the Academia. Itâs the same with hiding places. Raven found them for us in the warrens, which have nothing to do with the Academia. She also found glass and some metal bits outside of the campusâsheâd never been on the campus before Giselle led her here.
âSo whatever the problem is, itâs not just Academia related. I meanâof course Killian wouldnât be aware of hiding places outside of the Academia, but they still existed.â
âWhat did Raven feel you were hiding from?â
âGangs? Thugs? People whoâd sell us into slavery in the fiefs?â He paused, and then added, âCold.
