WHAT CONFIDENCE CAN DO
We have discussed the merits of quiet confidence and admitted those areas where we don’t feel fully confident ourselves, or talked about times where we came dangerously close to a confidence crisis and had to fight to overcome it. Despite those moments and in spite of our belief that a whispered, steely confidence can be as strong as a ballsy, smash-it-out-of-the-park confidence – different times call for different kinds – we do believe it is important to nurture and build confidence. It is, ultimately, necessary for success.
Here’s why:
Confidence is liberating
If you tackle one thing successfully, you will find that you keep on going, riding the crest of the wave. Often, the things that cause you stress are those that you are scared of dealing with and hence recur year after year. If your business isn’t going well, sometimes you have to ask yourself if something is chipping at your confidence and preventing you from moving forward? Could it be a friend that puts you down? An unsupportive member of your family? Your own feelings about your appearance, health or fitness? An unhappy event from the past that has never been resolved? Smashing that issue could be the thing that frees you and allows you to take brave, bold steps with your business. No business ever grew without taking risks and if you are playing safe in order to minimise your fear and stress levels, then you and your business will be stuck.
Confidence unlocks creativity
Only when you are unafraid of going wrong or saying the wrong thing, will you find the most creative solutions to your problems.
Sophie: ‘I’ve always been good at coming up with creative or innovative ideas and this is partly borne of the fact that I feel confident in that area. When it comes to this, I know how those unswervingly confident people feel. It just comes easily to me, like riding downhill on a bicycle, as my mother used to say. I enjoy it, the ideas flow and I don’t worry about anyone calling the rubbish ideas out because I know I have plenty more good ones up my sleeve. That piece of knowledge about myself is so important because it gives confidence in other things.’
Somehow, with creativity, we can be too shy. As Winston Fletcher, author of Seven Keys to Superefficiency, said to Sophie once: ‘When it comes to creativity, we are our own worst censors.’ We have been very lucky to have each other to bounce ideas around, both good and bad. A supportive environment will give you the freedom to say the ‘wrong’ thing, which will lead you eventually to the ‘right’ place. Remember to offer that kind of support to those close to you and do not scorn what at first sounds like an off-the-wall solution.
