Chapter Twelve

Outside the FBI building, the rideshare Daisy had contacted arrived precisely on schedule. She gave the driver, Marlene, the address of the motel and settled back. Marlene—a motherly woman with short, frizzy hair and cat-eye sunglasses—drove a spotless Hyundai that smelled of lavender air freshener, reminding her of Slade’s mama. When she looked out the window, Daisy spotted a dark blue van on the opposite side of the street and was glad when it pulled away before she had a chance to study the logo. Not Eric again! She refused to let him frighten her. The creep lived in Pueblo and might be here by coincidence. Yeah, right.

At the pink stucco Sundowner Motel, she asked Marlene to wait for her to check in and if she could then drop her off at a place where she could buy all the everyday stuff she’d left behind when she and Carter drove away from Leadville. After a quick peek into room number eighteen on the second floor—plain, simple and clean, with a small circular table by the window and two full-size beds—she jumped back into the Hyundai. After arranging to return in a half hour, Marlene dropped her off at a superstore where she could purchase everything from deodorant to diamonds. Daisy marched her shopping cart through the automated doors.

Buying toothpaste and T-shirts gave her a pleasant feeling of normalcy. As long as there were superstores, she could put down roots anywhere. She picked up the basics: aspirin, travel-size shampoo, moisturizer and toothbrush. The familiar array of products and the layout of the store lulled her into a sense of security—possibly a false sense. She reminded herself that Andrea Lindstrom had been grabbed in a grocery store parking lot. Shaking her head, she erased the last bit of alcohol-induced relaxation. Stay alert.

She headed toward the women’s department, where she could pick up a change of clothes. When her cart rounded the end of the aisle, she came face-to-face with a white-haired man, tall and heavyset, hauling an oxygen tank in his cart. He glared at her.

After an aisle dance where they both went left, then right, he muttered, “I know you.”

A threat. She backed away, whipping her cart in a U-turn and going to the end of the aisle. The comfortable atmosphere of the store darkened. What had made her think she was safe in here? These customers and clerks could all be serial killers...or worse. Really? What was worse? Before she turned into the next aisle, she thought she spotted Eric.

The old man bumped the back of her legs with his cart. Still glaring, his ruddy complexion and broken capillaries primarily on his bulbous nose hinted at alcoholism. He pointed at her and shook his head.

She zipped away from him. Her imagination soared out of control. Why, oh why hadn’t she agreed to spend the night at Carter’s cabin? Even if she wasn’t targeted as a victim, she knew too much about the investigation—enough that the killer might consider her a threat.
