CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The shadow that was Inspector Sebastian Pinsley was quite pleased with its upgrade in host. The girl Cassiopeia had been a useful vessel for the early stages of all of this, and an amusing way to sample all of the pleasures of the human world, but there was something about the inspector that was far more suited to these last hours.
For one thing, he was a man of the right kind of age, and that made some things simply easier in a world where people equated those things with authority. He found that no one questioned him now. No one tried to explain to him all the ways in which his ideas would not work, or questioned whether he really meant what he said.
Then there was the fact that he was simply larger and stronger than he had been. It was easy for a shadow to unlock the full potential of a bodyâs muscles, granting strength beyond that of most humans, but that potential was still limited by size, and by the existing power of the muscles the host possessed. Pinsley gave the shadow much more potential when it came to violent acts.
Even the mind was helpful. While the hostâs consciousness was locked away behind walls of the shadowâs devising, it was still useful to have access to resources of memory and analysis, deduction and existing knowledge. Inspector Pinsley was a treasure trove in that regard, which made the shadow grateful that it had decided to take him, rather than attempting to kill him with the body it possessed before. The upgrade would make its plans go much smoother.
They were its plans. In so far as the shadows had leaders, it was one, or at least, it was more powerful than the others of its kind, and that amounted to the same thing. It had no name, nor badge of office, nor title; such things were for the hateful human world of form and order. Still those other shadows that brushed against it knew its power and hastened to obey, because they did not want to suffer its violence.
Those plans would allow for the destruction of the human world, for its capture, for its conquest. If you could call it a conquest. The simple fact was that, once the great portal was opened, it would be about the possession and replacement of the human race, not commanding them through threats of violence, the way they did with one another.
They would take the world of form and order, tearing down its structures, remaking it in their images. Perhaps others of its kind would want to destroy things completely, but the shadow had seen more of this world now, had come to understand all the ways that having a physical form could be better and more pleasurable than the alternative. No, rather than destroying it, the shadows would take it. They would claim the humans as their own, farm them, control them like cattle, and walk among them like gods.
All thanks to the inspector, and the moment when the shadow had decided not to kill him.
