CHAPTER 45

He floated in darkness, and it felt familiar, but he didn’t know why. Releasing the stray thought, he returned to the calm and peaceful silence. He felt the vibration first, a cross between an itch and a tickle, striking him, and he tried to move away, but the unwelcome new sensation followed, and worse, it grew more intense.

Sometime later he heard a faint ringing, which combined with the vibrations, made him…he couldn’t think of the proper concept…it made him different than before, and he wanted to go back to the before.

Eventually he wondered about the vibrations and ringing and after a while he thought they might be linked.

The feeling and sound both intensified again, the ringing sounding metallic. Metallic, he thought, what a strange word.

Somewhere distant, but connected to him somehow, he felt warmth.

He wondered about warmth and what it actually meant.

Blinding light surrounded him and a sensation like warmth, but a lot more of it, enveloped him. He didn’t like this feeling and wanted to return to the before.

The light faded or he got used to it, but the blinding light that had erased the darkness of before, revealed the source of the glare, a sphere.

The ball rotated, the light on its surface swirling, bathing everything near it in warmth.

Warmth.

Perhaps this might be better than the before. He could stay here and watch the glowing ball. Warmth. Yes, this might be better than the quiet darkness.

But the itching and ringing wouldn’t stop. He turned away from the sphere of warmth and looked for the source of irritation.

A strange creature stood behind him. Its long twisting body had thousands of legs, and massive black wings sprouted from its back. Pincers protruded from its neck, curving around a mouth filled with sharp teeth. Blonde pigtails fell to each side, framing a pyramid shaped head with two dark, gold specked eyes.

This was irritation.

He didn’t like irritation and turned back to the warmth.

But the glowing sphere had disappeared.

The darkness of before had returned, but he now missed warmth.

Even the irritation might be better than the darkness he thought.

Turning, he found irritation remained.

The vibrations and ringing intensified.

He moved toward irritation and studied it.

The mass of legs created another feeling, disgust.

Disgust and irritation, but still better, he thought, than the cold darkness of before.

As he neared disgust and irritation, he found the legs on one side each held a gold plate, and the source of his irritation originated there.

Each leg on the other side held a rod, and with a sudden movement, the plates and rods collided.

Waves of vibration and metallic ringing enveloped him, and he tried to move away, but as if sensing his closeness, irritation and disgust smashed their plates and rods together, fervently.

The vibrations and ringing grew louder and the warmth from before turned intense and uncomfortable. The vibrations pierced him, and he gasped at a new sensation, pain.

The pain took shape, and he realized he had a body. An entire body of pain.

Circles, rectangles, and symbols filled the darkness. In the top left, a mostly empty rectangle suddenly lost the remaining blue that filled it.
