As with the base in Salroduk, a formal line of power-armored Laian soldiers awaited them as they stepped onto Dreamer of Liberty’s decks. The Laian officers waiting for them were dressed almost identically, though Lodovoch was much smaller than Katavan.

Where Katavan had been a solid, if attractive to human eyes, bronze color, Lodovoch was a glittering creature of blues and red that shone in the lights of her ship’s shuttle bay. She approached and bowed to the two Imperial representatives.

“Welcome aboard Dreamer of Liberty, Envoy Awav, Captain Casimir,” she said. “I am Lodovoch, the Seventy-Eighth Sword of the Republic. I have, of course, been advised of your mission.”

“Then you have a good idea of my needs,” Awav told her. “I will need full data on your fueling, defenses, warships and recent excursions.”

“Recent excursions?” Lodovoch asked slowly.

“Yes,” Morgan confirmed. “We are parties to a defensive treaty with the Republic, Sword Lodovoch. The Wendira claim that the Republic has been attacking their facilities and ships and is provoking the conflict we all fear. If that is true, then the Imperium may not be bound by the terms of the treaty.

“We are obliged by our duties to our own citizens and soldiers to make absolutely certain that this is not the case.”

Morgan knew Laian body language, but she found Lodovoch hard to read. The Laian was very good at concealing her emotions, which was fascinating—not least in that she was very clearly doing so.

“Of course, of course,” the Sword finally allowed. “May I give you a tour of my vessel as I have my staff work on preparing that data for you? I also understand that you have a Past-Seeker on board who will be visiting the investigation sites?”

“We do, though I leave that part of our mission to him,” Morgan said.

“I will make certain my staff enable Past-Seeker Lodokan to make contact,” Lodovoch told her. “The Past-Seeker is my clan-mate. He may…forget if he is not reminded.”

Morgan swallowed a chuckle. Certain stereotypes of professors, it seemed, were universal.
