CHAPTER Thirteen

First thing next morning, Gwen went back to Ryan Cody’s office. She got past the receptionist without mishap, but the Prada-suited dragon guarding Cody’s office was another matter. When Gwen came to the door, the secretary actually got up from her desk and took up position in front of her boss’s door.

“Mr. Cody does not want to see you, Ms. Gellman,” she said coolly.

“Ask him again.”

“There’s no need for that.”

“Then ask him if he’d like to hear what Sal Almeida had to say about the Perotti murder.”

The woman glared at her for a moment, then spun and tapped on the door. She went into Cody’s office, firmly shutting the door behind her.

Gwen quickly moved behind the desk and slipped the flash drive into the port in the back of the secretary’s computer. The nasty little device downloaded the files more quickly than she would have thought possible.

The sound of footsteps in the hall outside had her lunging to take a seat, the electronic thief clenched in her hand.

The dark man she’d noticed during her first visit entered and disappeared into Cody’s office. After a few minutes the secretary returned to her post.

“Mr. Cody can see you in fifteen minutes. Would you like to wait, or will you come back?”

“I’ll wait.”

About twenty minutes later, a heavyset man rolled into the office. With a jolt of astonishment Gwen recognized Dennis Walsh, the police captain and her former boss. He gave Gwen a fulminating glare.

The secretary nodded politely to him and picked up the phone. After a few murmured comments, she hung up. Ryan Cody opened the door to his office.

“Please come in, Captain Walsh. Ms. Gellman.”

She followed them into the office. “This is my attorney, Wallace Edmonson,” Cody said, nodding toward the dark man.

Edmonson stepped forward and shook hands with the captain, then nodded to Gwen. “May I take your jacket?”

She stripped off the battered leather garment and handed it to him. He draped it carefully on the coat tree and took a seat at the small conference table.

Once they were settled, Cody cleared his throat. “Ms. Gellman, you have been making some serious accusations. I agreed to this meeting because I want to make it very clear that I will not tolerate you telling lies to my wife.”

“What lies would those be?”

“Captain Walsh denies your allegation that no report was made of my daughter’s disappearance. In fact, he brought a copy of the report.”

“May I see it?”

Walsh looked to Cody, who nodded. He handed it over. Gwen studied the report. It looked legit, but Mary had said she couldn’t find any record of Meredith, and Gwen trusted her word over Walsh’s.

“Can I keep this?”

“There’s no reason why you should,” Walsh told her.

“Is there a reason why I shouldn’t?”

“That’s not the point,” Cody said. “You have no further need for it.”

Gwen gave him a cool smile. “Dianne Cody hired me to find her daughter. Until I do, or until she says otherwise, I keep looking. Unless, of course, any of you
