Chapter 18

“Gavin’s mom hooked up with Westbrooke?” Xander drawled as Raine pulled away from Biovita.

“So it appears.” Raine slid a sidelong glance at her friend. “Were you there when Vidis spoke to him?”

“I don’t kiss and tell,” Xander warned.

Raine fought back the urge to roll her eyes because her best friend had a tendency to overshare, normally after a copious amount of alcohol. But she let Xander have her delusion. “Don’t want a blow-by-blow. Just your impressions on the man.”

Xander took a minute, clearly gathering her thoughts. “A voice over a phone line isn’t much to work with.”

Raine drummed her fingers on the steering wheel. “I get that, but other than knowing he’s on the Council and acts as a liaison with the human’s European governments, I can’t get a picture of who I’m dealing with.”

Xander hitched a leg up into the seat, and despite the seat belt, she managed a position that let her see Raine. “Well, we know he’s doing the dirty with Gavin’s mom.”

“Yeah, not sure that’s helpful,” Raine said drily.

“No, but I do find it interesting, considering Westbrooke’s reach. Is she using him, or is it a true love match?”

Raine wasn’t comfortable sharing Gavin’s opinion that his mother wasn’t capable of a true relationship. Besides, she worried his experience with the woman colored how he saw her and her choices. Instead, she went with the neutral, “In the end, does it really matter?”

“Maybe,” Xander said. “If she decides to use that relationship to get to Gavin and by extension the Northwest, then that maybe becomes yes.”

Stunned by the shifter’s implication, Raine risked looking away from the road to glance at Xander. “Is that what you think? That Nyla faked her own kidnapping to get Gavin’s attention?” She turned her attention back to the road and shook her head. “No way. First, Gavin barely has anything to do with her. She’s tried repeatedly to reforge her connection with him. I’ve been there before when she called, and let me tell you, I did not envy her. Gavin was cold as ice. When she called this time, it was clear she expected him to blow her off, and when he agreed to see her, she was relieved, really relieved.”

“And second?” Xander asked.

“Second, it may not be her that’s trying to find a way into the Northwest.”

Xander’s laugh was soft. “Oh my god, he was right.”

Not quite following, Raine frowned. “Who?”

“Warrick. He warned me you’d think Westbrooke was up to no good.”

“Maybe he isn’t,” Raine argued. “Leo’s name wasn’t alone when we were trying to figure out who was gunning for Mulcahy and Natasha. Maybe Westbrooke’s involved up to his eyebrows and is just using Drake’s request to cover his ass.” She warmed up to her theory. “What if Westbrooke’s behind the missing Kyn and this is his way of not only removing Nyla but the Northwest from whatever diabolical plans the Council has?”

“I think you and I have become way too cynical,” Xander said.

She might be right, but
