Chapter 31

Magnus’ idea of flying the drone a hundred yards off the highway over the bayou from a moving Jeep worked surprisingly well. I drove the Jeep while he manned the drone. I’ll admit, his skills impressed me. He controlled the drone and kept half an eye on the camera feed transmitting to the laptop in his lap as we cruised along.

“Anything yet?” I asked for about the fifteenth time.

“Not yet,” he said, unperturbed by the repetitive nature of our conversation over the last thirty minutes. “How about on your end?”

“Nope,” I said dejectedly, glancing in the rearview mirror. Cars had been passing us regularly. I liked to give them as much room as I could by squeezing the Jeep onto the narrow shoulder of the two-lane road.

“Wait!” Something drew my attention behind us. “There’s an SUV back there. It’s just hanging out behind us. Most cars have passed us in short order. This guy? Just moseying along.”

“Could he just be enjoying the scenery? A family out for an afternoon pleasure cruise?” Magnus asked, not looking up from the laptop.

My eyes flicked back to the rearview mirror, checking out the dark SUV behind us. “Maybe? I don’t know. I don’t like it.”

“Well, keep an eye out and let me know if anything changes. We can deal with a look-y-loo if need be.” Magnus kept his attention on the monitor in front of him, searching for any hint of vibrations from the little tracker. Nothing.

My nerves continued to ratchet up with every mile. The SUV was still behind us. I was already making plans to pull off and stage an ambush when the SUV following us turned off at the Grand Isle Beach. I sighed in relief, releasing some tension from my shoulders. It must have just been a family out on a day trip.

Magnus glanced up at me. “We only have about five more miles until we run out of road,” he said, waving the map.

I cracked my neck, keeping my focus on the road. “Well, let’s drive until we get to the end. Then we can take a quick stretch before starting back.”

Magnus murmured his agreement, returning his attention to the camera feed on the laptop.

It turned out that the end of the road was in the middle of the Grand Isle National Park. We followed the ever-narrowing pavement until the road spit us out into an empty parking lot surrounded by sand dunes covered in long grass, blowing in the sea breeze. I could taste the salt on the air and saw a smudge of water peeking out above the green of the beach grass. Two buildings framed the entrance to a weathered boardwalk that stretched towards the Gulf, ensuring any visitors didn’t trample the delicate flora on their way to the beach.

Magnus jumped out of the car and neatly landed the drone on the pavement as I pulled to a stop.

“Might as well use the stop to change out the batteries so we can make a longer
