Chapter 14

They should have brought water. The hot wind blowing across the outback sucked the moisture right out of them. A candy bar or two would have been nice, too. Even a few bags of airline peanuts. It was too late to go back for any now, but Wang berated himself for foolishly leaving without stocking up. He had allowed himself to rush, and this was the result. He wondered what other vital supplies he had forgotten.

The 747 was a small glint of silver in the distance behind them. Ayers Rock was a big bump in the distance in front of them. They were marching a bit to the left of it, staying behind a line of low bushes whenever they could in the hope that they might come around from the north end without alerting anyone. It was probably a futile attempt; anybody on top of the Rock with a pair of binoculars could see them coming for miles, but it was the only thing Wang could think of that might possibly give them an advantage.

“Must you walk so fast?" Flo asked after the first couple of miles.

“Ancient Japanese saying,” Wang told her. “He who hesitates is last.”

“Ancient Japanese saying, my ass,” she said. “Slow down.”

“As you wish.” Wang slowed his pace, but not by much. He wanted to get there and finish the job, not wander through the outback with his tongue hanging out for another hour or two.

That was not to be. Less than a mile later, he heard a rattle of rock and a sharp exclamation from behind him, and turned to see Flo on the ground cradling her left foot in her hands.

“What's the matter? What happened?" he asked, bending down to help her up.

She didn't try to stand. “I twisted my ankle. The wind caught me while I was stepping over a rock and blew my foot away from where I was trying to step.” She moved it carefully from side to side. “Ow!”

Wang bent down in front of her and ran his hands over her leg and foot. Her skin felt warm and smooth beneath his own, but he ignored the sensations that passed through him at her touch and concentrated on feeling for damage. He couldn't feel any broken bones, but when he pressed against the tendons she cried out in pain. He pressed again, trying to isolate which one it was, but she cried out again when he pushed on a different one.

“Which one is it?" he asked. “This, or —”

“Ow! That one!”

He had pushed on a third.

“You could not pull three different tendons,” he said. “Let's try again. This one, or —”

“Let's not,” she said. “It hurts; let's leave it at that, okay?”

“If I can find which one it is, I can use acupressure to ease pain,” he told her.

“Look, it's a pulled muscle. It's going to hurt. Just give me a minute to get my strength back, okay?”

Wang nodded, impressed. She was willing to go on despite her pain; that was the mark of a good warrior.
