When looking at Fay Jones’s works, I am thinking of the integrity of the fractal phenomenon; all parts contain the same internal formal characteristics as the entity. A Fay Jones floor plan, such as of the Monaghan House (1992) has the visual texture of the material execution of his houses as well as the rhythmic articulation of his wood lanterns or other details (Figure 8.7 ). In the same manner that snow crystals, with their basic crystal symmetry, produce endless formal variations on the theme of frozen water, Fay Jones’s symmetrical articulations of the wood frame construction seem to produce an unlimited number of alternative architectural entities. Although the products of his work are different architectural solutions, Fay Jones, as do all true artists and architects, seems to articulate his own existential experiences, his “encounter with the world,” to use an expression of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, the philosopher. 11 The unquestioned authority of any artistic work arises from this fundamentally existential focus.
