Despite it being late in the day by the time they made it back to the precinct, they found Doc Josie still in her lab, staring through a microscope. Jason dropped the gun on the steel table next to her. The echoing twang startled the department head, and she bolted away from the scope.

“Dear Lord, Jason. You scared the crap out of me.”

“Sorry, Doc.”

She eyed him suspiciously. “I bet.”

“No, really. I was just saying to Dianna that I hoped I didn’t startle you.”

Josie looked at Torres. “Did he?”

“Not that I recall.”

“That’s what I thought!”

Jason lifted the gun back off the table. “Here, I’ll hand it to you nicely. Can you test fire this and compare it against the Layne projectiles?”

“Sure. Probably be tomorrow before I get it done though.”

“That’s fine. Oh, by the way, are you going to the funeral?”

Josie nodded. “Of course.”

“See you there.”

Jason and Torres headed back up to the third floor. Lieutenant Savage was waiting for them. “How did it go?”

Jason shrugged. “Okay. We had a chance to talk with him, and we got his firearm for testing.”

“Did you learn anything new?”

“Not really. His alibi is the same as his wife’s, which is they were home together all night.”

Torres ripped a piece of paper from her pad. “Those are both of the Carlos’s phone numbers. Can you get the records for us?”

Savage took the paper. “Sure. What’s next?”

Jason sighed. “The funeral.”

Savage closed his eyes. “Yeah, I forgot. Tomorrow morning, right?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then you two need to get home and get some rest. Tomorrow will not be an easy day.”
