Fifteen

When I came back to reality, I saw bright white everywhere. I might’ve thought I’d gone to the other side or whatever if it weren’t for the constant, annoying beeping at my side.

My addled brain and blurry eyes cleared enough for me to recognize a hospital room. I was in the bed, surrounded by wires and tubes. Mia and Merry were slouched in chairs beside me, half asleep. Harley was staring out the grimy, dark window. Ny and Gareth sat, asses to the floor, hands over knees, and heads down in identical, masculine poses of worry. It would be a cute picture of care and love, from all of them, if it weren’t for the beeping. Oh, and the pain wailing a sharp brass note in my head.

“Hey.” My voice croaked, sounding scratchy to my own ears.

Everyone perked up, and voices rose at the same time. Harley strolled over to Mia and Merry, who jumped up and started chattering and fussing all at once. Gareth and Ny rose from the floor and hovered at the foot of my ginormous hospital bed.

“Wait,” I called softly, and they all stopped. “My head is killing me. Can one person at a time talk, please?” I asked, looking pointedly at my sisters.

Mia nodded at Merry, who bent down and gave a sweet kiss to the edge of my forehead. It stung but the emotion warmed, so I didn’t complain. “What happened?”

“Officially or in reality?” Mia muttered.

“Both, I guess.”

Merry smoothed my hair down in soothing strokes. “Officially, you were involved in a hit-and-run. Suffered a massive concussion but no other damage. You’ve been out for a while. They were afraid—” She stopped, swallowed hard, and gathered herself, then continued. “The doctors thought you might be in a coma. Luckily, that’s not the case.”

“No, not the case,” Mia said, “but the docs need to check you out ASAP. We have to make sure everything inside is okay.”

I nodded and winced at the bob, pain radiating like lightening at the back of my head. “How long was I out?”

“About four hours,” Gareth said, his voice thick and slow.

“Okay. Call in the doctors. Then you can tell me what really went down.”

“Oh, um, you might want to also call Mom and Dad first. They were about to book flights when I talked to them ten minutes ago.”

I sighed, in too much pain to scream at Merry but I did give her hard eyes. “Call them back. Now. No need for them to come.”

“I’ll try to talk them down,” Mia said, pulling her phone from her pocket, “but no promises. And don’t be all mad about it.” Her eyes glistened. “We were scared shitless for you, sis.”

I couldn’t blame them. If either of them had been out cold for hours, I’d be out of my mind with worry, and I would’ve told Mom and Dad. Still didn’t mean I wanted to deal with them now. Especially with some dude with masses of power and a wicked bitch slap prowling around Columbus.
