Chapter Sixteen

The owner of Worlen & Carp didn’t look nearly as overwhelmed by a class of twenty-six students from the Academy of Necessary Magic as he had the first time they’d stepped into his shop sophomore year. He didn’t exactly smile, but he nodded at LeFor standing outside the entrance before the first group of kids stepped inside to peruse his inventory and grab everything on their lists for their required “work kits.”

He was only willing to allow six in at a time. Max.

Amanda didn’t make it into the first group, but she wasn’t in a hurry. Instead, her attention was only halfway on listening to her friends point out the crazy pixie selling yellow snow cones or the gnome on a bicycle hawking “the planet’s most intuitive underwear with smart-magic technology” as he swerved between pedestrian groups.

Summer fell into another fit of laughter. “I mean, how stupid do you have to be to think anyone’s gonna buy that crap?”

Alex shook his head. “Not even humans are dumb enough to buy yellow snow cones.”

“Ha. You sure?”

The other half of Amanda’s attention, though, was on trying to find Matt Hardy so she could make sure she stayed as far away from him as possible. LeFor did a quick headcount inside the store, then nodded for them to go inside. “I mean, unless you don’t want to buy a bunch of useless crap we’ll probably never use but won’t get out of this hellhole without.”

Amanda snorted. “Yeah, okay. I’m coming.”

They hurried toward the shop, and Summer marched inside with a grin as she stared at the shelves of electrical components and the kind of magically enhanced tech impossible to find aboveground.

“Hold on, Miss Coulier,” LeFor said, bringing his hand down in front of her to stop her. “That was six.”

“Aw, really?”

He looked down at her and raised an eyebrow. “I’m sure you’re not that disappointed. As soon as someone comes out, you can go in.”

“All right.” She shrugged and backed away before turning to scan the kemana again. It was nearly impossible to pick out any faces among the crowds of magicals strolling back and forth, talking and laughing, haggling prices, or hurrying across the giant cavern with important business of their own.

Who am I kidding? I’m not looking for his face. I’m looking for his magic. Red, sparking, dark magic that shouldn’t be allowed in our school.

Though after Matt had practically begged her to talk to him about what she’d seen—about what they’d both seen of each other—Amanda’s conviction that the shifter boy was a dark magical in wolf’s clothing had lost a lot of its strength.

He wasn’t angry. Someone with
