CHAPTER FOUR

Now

Adam found her sometime later, perched on the bed of the second room she’d impulsively decided to rent in order to get some privacy.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

His tone was reproachful, but it still carried a hint of concern. Silver didn’t know why he still cared after what she had almost done.

“Thanks,” she murmured, not daring to face him. “For stopping me.”

A moment of silence passed, then he sighed and came to sit next to her. “I don’t know what happened back there, but I’m guessing it had something to do with that.”

He gestured to her hands when he said it. She didn’t bother hiding them anymore; he’d already seen them shaking after the car chase.

Using her magic had momentarily stopped the tremors, but it was back now, along with the burning in her veins. Still, despite the temptation, she hadn’t once drawn power from the electrical sources around her, so it was getting easier to deal with the pain.

She hesitated to talk about it, but then she sighed in defeat. He was the one who brought her back from her wild power trip. She owed him.

“When my magic is running low,” she started, “I can recharge it with electricity. It’s like taking shots of steroids mixed with pure crack. My powers get amplified for a while, but the withdrawals afterward are worse than if I were drained altogether.”

Though her eyes were fixed on her hands, she could feel his stare as though it were a physical sensation on the side of her head.

“Anytime I’m near a power source, resisting the temptation to draw from it is hard, but it’s even worse when my magic is weakened.”

“Is that what happened at the dealership?” he guessed. “You got drained?”

“Not quite, but I was running low. The first time I took power from the radio, it was a manageable dose, just enough to keep me from passing out, like yesterday. But I had to take more the second time.”

“Because of Vince.” He sighed, and his body sagged with the realization. “You risked yourself to protect us, and it put you in pain. No wonder you ran off.”

That was the main reason and the only one she would admit to. She certainly wasn’t about to divulge how she had felt when he kissed her.

“I had to shake off the worst of the symptoms,” she said instead. “It was working, but then I found that article, and it made everything worse.”

“That’s why you went nuclear on us. You thought Theresa used to work at the estate and that they released her to bait you.”

It wouldn’t be the first time someone’s death was faked to cover up their recruitment—or the last for that matter.

“Can you blame me?” she said. “You saw the article. What else was I supposed to think?”

“Well, let me put your mind at ease. I’ve been at the estate since I was fourteen, and I’ve never seen her there.”

Her head snapped up in his direction, taken aback by what he just revealed.
