Rosana stopped scanning the list at the mention of the Blighted Knife. The drawing matched the etchings of her throwing knives perfectly. How is that possible? Sana was in disbelief. It doesn’t have a listed function, but it obviously does something if it killed the wizards who touched it. She continued to contemplate the knife and its significance as the others discussed objects that interested them.
“Can you imagine if Lattimer had access to some of these things? What if he had the Closed Door and used blood magic to open it? He could go anywhere and attack at any time. Even if we did get close enough to attack, he could just escape through the door!” Annarelle thought aloud.
“These tiny elephants interest me. They could be used to speed construction by leveling a foundation or be placed inside of a battering ram to produce a siege weapon of immense power.” Ibson contemplated the function of the artifact.
“You aren’t fooling us, Ibson. I know you just want to see a tiny wooden elephant walking around.” Annarelle teased the old wizard.
“Do you see the right-hand side?” Slate asked eagerly. “They haven’t found any of the artifacts.”
Annarelle said, “Yes, apparently some measure of luck or a fractal’s blessing has been on our side.”
Ibson disagreed. “The desert storage facility is vast, if not infinite. They can dig forever and never find a single artifact. It is simple probability. People attribute too many logical outcomes to fractal’s blessings and grace in this world.” Sana couldn’t agree more, but her mind still focused on the blighted knife and she didn’t join the conversation.
“Look at this one, Slate. Do you have any need for the Pendant of the Patriarch?” Annarelle referenced his recent exploits.
Slate took the comment light-heartedly but didn’t try to hide his embarrassment. His reaction furthered Rose’s initial assessment that he was indeed a good man worthy of Rosana. Slate turned the conversation back to more serious matters. “So to summarize, there is a walled city that we can’t break into and a bunch of artifacts that we can’t obtain, but the good news is that Lattimer has failed on both counts as well?”
“That’s an accurate summary.” Annarelle reported dutifully, cutting off one of Ibson’s long-winded responses.
“Ok, then tell me about this room full of blood. What did the headmaster find in Magnus’ room to suggest this place exists?” Slate asked the group.
“The room full of blood is a phylactery of a grand scale. A phylactery is typically a small vial or bottle containing a magical specimen, but Lattimer took the idea to new extremes and built an entire room to store his collection. With this room secure, Lattimer can maintain an existing spell that utilizes the samples. The Sicarius Headmaster has informed me that Lattimer is capable of using someone’s blood to subjugate their mind against their will and turn them into a Fury. He will store the blood used to create these subjugates in a phylactery. My understanding is that this technique was also used to subjugate King Darik.
