After the Ostara ritual, I made up my mind to visit Liam Brown. I wasn’t sure whether he’d want to speak with me. After all, I was about to accuse him of murdering his girlfriend. Not exactly endearing. However, he was my logical next step. I still wondered whether Adolphus merely tried to throw us off his track, but then again, Chase said that he was in prison at the time of Maria’s murder.

So, going to the library once more, I managed to dig up about half a dozen “L. Browns,” in the phone directory. Using that, plus plain old internet stalking through various social media outlets, I managed to find Liam’s address. He lived in a newer subdivision of Good Harbor. Definitely on the swankier side of town, near the docks. As I drove past the huge houses, each with their own electronic gate, I couldn’t help but wonder what sort of person could be accused of murder, then go on to live in such an established part of town.

I pulled up to a three-story house, complete with a lush, landscaped front yard, and heavy oak door with stained glass. I could practically smell the new roof. Before I got out of the car, I took a deep breath. One of my professors at the local community college of magical arts encouraged me to do a small spell after attempting one that had failed in order to rebuild my confidence. And after the Ostara ritual, I certainly felt like a dismal failure.

“If you fall off the horse,” she said, “Get back in the saddle. But it’s okay to ride a pony first.”

So even if I wasn’t feeling the most confident about my magical abilities, I concentrated on the flow of magical energy. I reached into myself and focused on what I needed, weaving a truth-telling enchantment. If Liam told the truth, his aura would glow white, if not, it would show black. Taking a deep breath, I opened my eyes, then released the spell. Hopefully, he wouldn’t turn into a mouse or have all his hair fall out.

I had already worked the morning shift at the restaurant, so I was still in my work uniform. Hopefully, it would give me the appearance of being somewhat professional. When I rang the doorbell, a delicate chime sounded.

Whatever I had expected Liam to look like, it certainly wasn’t what I saw as he opened the door. I had expected a potential throat-cutting boyfriend to look menacing, maybe with a scar slashed across one eyebrow or dressed in black, ceremonial robes.

But nope. What stood before me was a man in his early forties with warm brown eyes, a straight nose, and a taut stomach. His jeans hung loosely around his hips, and his simple Grateful Dead t-shirt was faded from plenty of washings.

“Can I help you?” His voice was also surprisingly high-pitched for a man, but it seemed to suit him.

My spell appeared to be working because his aura was now a neutral color, somewhere between beige and dun.
