Chapter 17

Andia jerked awake, splashing cold bathwater over the bathroom floor. The noise that had awoken was all too familiar. She slipped out of the tub and peeked around the corner. A man lay on the floor at the foot of the bed, blood seeping from his head. Another man was seated in a chair next to the door. She wrapped a towel around herself and walked out.

"Thomaas?" She couldn't keep the tremble out of her voice. The man on the floor was most definitely dead, she saw, as she drew closer. Thomaas was disguised as a bum. Why was he here? Who was the dead man?

"Andi, we have problems." His voice, calm and quiet, frightened her.

"I know." She pulled on underwear under the towel, then pants. Turned her back to him and slipped on a bra and shirt. After all she'd put herself through, she still had a streak of modesty for some reason.

"Grigory is looking for you."

"Does he work for Grigory?" She motioned toward the corpse.

"Yes. He was too close to finding you."

"Why are you here? Have you followed me on every assignment?"

Thomaas took a deep breath and paused. "You have always been a good child. The perfect executor of the Will. Your last few assignments were not so perfect."

"I understand about Grigory—"

Thomaas put up his hand. "Even before this, you showed signs of weakness. Mother assigned me to watch you more closely."

This admittance shocked her. Thomaas rarely explained himself or the actions of the Family. Why would he now? Was her time at an end?

"Don't fear, Andi. You know you're a daughter to me in several senses."

"Do you love me, Thomaas?"

"Of course, or I would not have intervened."

"Had I been another Sister, I would have died?"

"If she'd grown so careless, yes."

"I don't understand."

Thomaas stood. "Don't expect interventions in the future. You must change course, redeem yourself."

"I want to."

"I know. Now rest, and wedge your door shut behind me." He left.

She hadn't wedged her door shut earlier? How stupid could she be? Thomaas hadn't mentioned what to do about the dead man at the foot of her bed either. She'd probably have to wait until dark. But where could she dispose of a body? Could she even sleep, knowing he was there? If he worked for Grigory, he deserved his death. His soul now burned in hell. This eased her mind somewhat. She offered a prayer to the voices of God and slept.
