LEVEL GRIND

Carver was pleased that his dinner stayed down as he took the shuttle back to Spaceport City. The flight home was quieter than the one up to the orbital docking complex. Most of the passengers were Gray Moon industrial workers heading to Metraxeon for their days off, and they either slept or read the news on their holophones. Carver sat next to a middle-aged man wearing a red industrial jumpsuit who promptly closed his eyes and went to sleep.

That was all right. It gave Carver a chance to think.

Seventeen five hundred thousand credits was a lot of money, and would go a long way towards giving Carver something of a financial cushion. The costs of the divorce had cleaned him out, especially since he had gotten fired from Maskell at the same time.

The credits would be nice.

But this was an opportunity he could not pass.

A code capture might be exactly what he needed to prove that someone in Maskell had been building a Reactant inside Sevenfold Sword Online. Code capturing was seriously illegal on Metraxeon, which was one of the reasons Carver hadn’t attempted it. Plus, he didn’t have the equipment to do it properly. The computer in his bedroom could manage it, but it would take even that powerful system days to break the encryption on the encoding around a single steel dagger, let alone a massive slice of the game like Wire wanted to capture.

But it would not be illegal on a New Shanghai consular ship, and if the code capture found proof of a Reactant…

Carver might be done with all of this.

Wire had enough contacts and contracts with the military and the Ministry of Defense that he could take the proof to them, and they would act. Quite a lot of people inside Maskell Entertainment would get arrested, but the threat would be over. Maskell Industries would not use the game to create a Reactant and bring back the xianzhar.

And then Carver could move on with a clear conscience.

Time and time again, he had thought about abandoning his search, about doing as Royce suggested and finding a new job. Every time, his conscience had stopped him. He had known what he had seen, even if he hadn’t yet found concrete proof that would convince the Commonwealth authorities to act.

But maybe the code capture would produce that proof, and then Carver could walk away. Do something else other than think about the damned game all the time. Maybe he would even take Royce up on his offer and run Carver Convenience Foods’ inventory management software full-time.

The shuttle landed at the spaceport, and the passengers filed. The man sitting next to Carver grunted, yawned, and got to his feet. Carver joined the queue of people exiting the shuttle and soon found himself back in the spaceport. It was past 10 PM local time, and Carver felt the fatigue closing in. He had gotten up early to exercise and go to church, and his bed was sounding more and more appealing.
