There you have two independent clauses — “she doesn’t enjoy cauliflower” and “she always avoids it when she can” — with a dependent clause leading the sentence (“Although Sadie likes broccoli”).

Compound-complex sentences add a certain complexity to a piece of text and convey a sense of rich writing. Down the line, it will be good to take on such sentences, even though they can be something of a minefield. Again, however, that is down the line. You will get no demerits if your writing does not feature compound-complex sentences. You will, however, get demerits for compound-complex sentences that are riddled with errors.

Now that we know that all sentences fall into one of these four categories — simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, and compound-complex sentences — we can discuss some of the more common problems that afflict them.
