They never considered the possibility that one of them alone might catch a sickness and pass it on. All of their air was shared; all of their touches.

You get it I get it, they said. I get it you get it.

In the dark hall, the draught beneath the bedroom door created by the left-open window stirred Pip and Voss from sleep. It contained the stifled sounds and wispy scents of small beasts prowling, hunting, staking territory. Pip pressed her nose to the threshold. She sniffled and puffed. Voss raised his head and monitored the situation, softly growling.

In their fifth July, Bell resurrected the denim leg left over from the pair of jeans Sigh wore as swimming trunks. It had been put away inside a drawer of dislocated sleeves, hems and shirt collars. She sewed the hip up and he wadded it full of the other rags, and some kitchen-roll, the polyester floss of an ancient cushion. Then she sewed the foot up and laid it down to plug the crack.

But the draught-leg refused to slump; to form a dead weight between the floor and door. It should have been stuffed with sand or beans. Instead it was too light, too pert.

The night,

its whispers and spice,

continued to leak past.
