Bartholomew turned to face the cave with an impatient stride in his step.
âWeâve waited long enough. The treasures await, and no old man will be standing in our way,â he said.
Many in the group agreed, but Giles, as usual, objected. âShouldnât we listen to the Wizard? Theyâre supposed to help people, arenât they?â
âHe did save usâ¦â Bart agreed, then put hands to hips. âThen again, he may not have our best interests at heart. He doesnât care about us and would prefer it if we simply disappeared. He certainly doesnât care about you, and the struggling people of this land.â He pointed at Giles with authority.
âYeah! Balls to the Wizard!â Norman called out. The other bandit cheered along with him.
âBesides, we cannot let our brothersâ deaths be in vain. In their memory, we have to make this count. We may never get a chance like today again,â said Bartholomew.
That had been enough to convince Giles, who nodded in approval in his usual meek manner. The bandits drew their weapons and entered the cave. They could see a great blue light down the tunnel.
âWhat the hell is that?â Bart asked aloud as he heard one of his men crash to the ground behind him. âHey! Are you alright?â He bent over to check on the bandit, then turned to see Giles fall unconscious. He was breathing, but his eyes were glazed over, and drool dripped from his open mouth.
Norman looked to his leader with fear in his eyes. âWh-what do we do?â
âRetreat!â Bartholomew cried. The pair turned and ran for the exit.
Midway back, Bart felt Norman grabbing hold of his arm. He looked back to see that he was in the midst of a fall, and he had those same blank eyes that heâd seen from the others when they had fallen unconscious.
The bandit leader wriggled free and threw him to the ground.
âSorryâ¦â Bartholomew muttered as he returned focus to the light at the end of the tunnel. The tint of blue that heâd been experiencing since arriving on the island intensified, and soon, it was all he could see. His head became light as a feather, but that didnât stop panic from overcoming him. âN-no! No!â
A falling sensation was the last thing that Bart felt before being taken in completely. Suddenly, the inevitable impact with the ground, the Wizards, and the treasure no longer mattered. The blue void called to him, and he fully intended to answer that call.
