He was right about the Ashtons leaving a well-marked trail.

At one farm where Libby and the others stopped shortly after crossing the border, they learned that a smokehouse had been raided and two freshly washed shirts had been stolen from an old lady’s clothesline.

Later, they were greeted by a ranch owner with a bandage wrapped around his head. He’d been pistol-whipped, then had his shotgun and a bag of silver dollars taken from his cabin.

“They also took two of my best horses,” he said, “leaving the ones they rode in on. Both are so wore out and broke down I most likely should have just shot them and put them out of their misery. But since they’ve already been so mistreated, I think I’ll see if I can get them well enough to finish their lives in peace out in the pasture.”

Before they left, Novak and Williamson cleaned the cut on the rancher’s forehead and put on a fresh bandage. In turn, he offered them chicken soup and leftover corn bread, then filled their canteens from his well.

“Just like I told you,” Libby said as they rode away. “They’re leaving us signposts pointing where they’re going. It won’t be long now.”

“I hope when we do catch up to them,” said Lyndon, “we can bring that man’s horses and shotgun back to him. He seemed a nice fella.”
