Chapter 37
Wraith Busters
As though the manâs capture was the signal they were looking for, all the other wraiths started evacuating the battlefield. They retreated across the open ground, heading into the same woods as the one who had burst out of the police station had done.
Dez tried to chase after them. His black flames arced over the battlefield as he tried to hit the monsters at the head of the sudden exodus. Rory joined in belatedly, but there was no point. The Wraiths were too fast, moving almost like they had planned this sort of manoeuvre beforehand. Soon enough, they were all gone.
âWhat just happened?â Dez ground out when he jogged over to Rory, breathing a little hard. âDid they just carry off someone?â
âI donât know.â Rory turned to the police stationâs glass-plated building, starting to trudge over. âBut I figure the others might.â
Said others met Rory and Dez when they had reached the small parking lot at the back. Trish was armed to the teeth with her Sigils of Steel and Concrete, Allen looking like half-a-statue with a rubber shield. They sagged when they saw Rory and Dez. Ned and Evelyn followed behind, all looking downcast.
âSomeone going to explain what happened here?â Rory asked. âFrom the top.â
Trish let her summoned gear fade to nothing. âUh, itâs a long story. But we need to get to Alves first. Who knows what theyâre going to do to him.â
Alves had to be the poor kidnapped guy. Shoving aside all questions that he could ask later, Rory focused on what was pertinent. âDo you know where theyâre taking him?â
Trish nodded. âAlves was talking about how the Wraiths had abducted some other people to somewhere on Wither Elm Street. Thatâs where they must have taken him.â
âThen we donât have much time to lose. Whereâs your car?â
âYouâre right,â Allen said. âBut there are also a lot of supplies here. I donât think we should just leave everything behind. Itâs why we came to the police station in the first place.â
Rory was about to argue that someoneâs life came far, far before any supplies might, but however idealistically true that might be, he had to be practical too. âSome of you need to stay here, then. Gather everything you think is good and wait for us to return.â
âItâs not just him, though,â Trish said.
âThe bunker people.â Dez shook his head, opening his mouth as though to curse, but then bit down on it. âWe canât be everywhere at once. Theyâll just have to wait.â
âTheyâre not in any immediate danger, right?â Rory asked.
âWellâ¦â Trish exchanged nervous glances with Allen, who nodded grimly. âI donât think the Wraiths know where the bunker is or at least, they canât get to it for some reason. But now that theyâve got Alves, that might change.â
Rory sighed. Yet another direction they needed to shift their attention to. âWeâll just have to prioritize and hope we reach Alves before these Wraiths can get anything out of him. Letâs go.â
They decided to separate
