CHAPTER 16

DREAM CHANGER

Kaugatz, Serpent Isle – 6th Nethinch 1588

The men dragged the woman out of the cottage, and threw her to the ground in the middle of the armed mob.

‘Please!’ the woman cried. ‘I have five children!’

The men stared at her, their hate-filled faces reflecting the light from the burning torches.

‘Kill the Gifted bitch,’ said one, and it began.

Lahnos watched as the boots and fists descended upon his mother’s body. He tried to look away, but the nightmare held him transfixed. He knew he was dreaming, but was powerless to stop the images searing through his mind

‘Mother,’ he gasped, and the dream began to fade.

He looked around, and saw that he was in the garden of Uncle Friel’s cottage near Fidalaimos. Reyn was laughing next to him, her horns showing, and her tail swishing about behind her. She was so beautiful, and her smile made him want to reach out for her and never let go.

Was he still dreaming?

Yes, Lahnos; you are dreaming.

He frowned, feeling violated by the sudden appearance of the voice in his mind. ‘Are you watching my dreams?’

You keep having the same nightmare over and over; you keep seeing the death of your mother. It hurts to watch you suffer like this, so I changed your dream.

‘You changed my dream? Who are you?’

Does it matter? I am here to help you, Lahnos. The reason I am speaking to you is that I have information – information that you need to give to your uncle.

‘What are you talking about?’

I know all about the troubles of the Serpent Isle, or Zamata as you call it. I have witnessed the cruel violence that has swept over the island of your birth in the last few days. On one side you have the Dragon Dominion, and on the other you have the Empire of the Gunstians. I pity you, Lahnos, as I pity all who suffer.

‘Why me?’ he said. ‘I was talking to Reyn, and she asked me why you spoke to me and to no one else.’

I have made mistakes, Lahnos; terrible mistakes. Watching over you is one way I can salve my own conscience. Now, you must listen to everything I am about to tell you. I have read the thoughts of Lord Rufus, and know what he is planning.

‘You were in the dragon’s mind?’

Yes. Now listen carefully.

Lahnos fell silent, and the voice spoke to him of the plans drawn up by the dragon governor. When she had finished, he opened his eyes, and awoke next to Reyn in their small room in the monastery. He lay still in the dim shadows for a few moments, listening to the sound of Reyn breathing, then he turned, propped himself up on an elbow, and gazed down at the young woman lying under the thin blankets next to him. He leaned over and kissed her, then he nudged her shoulder.

She opened her eyes, stretched, and turned to him.

‘Is it morning?’ she said, lifting a hand to touch his face.

‘Not yet.’

‘Then why did you wake me up?’ She smiled.
