12. The Winter Riki-Riki Games
Days crawled into weeks, and still I heard no word from Dante. The revelation about his responsibilities weighed heavy on my shoulders. I yearned to comfort him and wanted to let him know that everything would be fine. But how did I know that? I wished it, but reality was perhaps going to be a bitter pill to swallow.
I spent most of my time with Zaira. Every now and again, we talked about my parents. Zaira’s tears of heartache had been replaced by overwhelming tears of joy after discovering her daughter had lived a happy life.
Some of the time, I learnt more about Zeneshia from Veremy. There was nothing old-fashioned about the way Tuscanians lived. It was extraordinary to know that these two worlds had never met, but the items they both needed to make their occupants comfortable existed.
Dante…just thinking of him made me feel so helpless. Why someone like him would care for someone like me was a mystery in its own right.
Weeks turned into months. As each long, dispiriting day passed, I missed him more. When nature finally cast its full wrath of winter, I spent most days indoors. My osiria roses had wilted. So had Dante, but the memory of our time together remained strong. Before I met him, all I wanted was freedom. Now, all I needed was his love.
The Tuscanian winter was Siberia at its coldest. The nights were exceptionally bitter. In daytime, people went about with their chores but quickly retired to their homes before sunset.
My evenings were spent in front of the fire with Blamorey, telling jokes. Zaira would sit with us, her beautiful melodies filling the air with warmth and contentment. Daphne and Talia were full of giggles. It didn’t matter whether it was day or night, winter or summer, their mood was always the same.
Nights were the hardest. When I went to bed, I found myself thinking of Dante and wondering why he had taken so long to contact me. Although winter could add to his absence, I worried he’d changed his mind about me after all.
If only I had a phone! Instead, I would pick up a few dry petals that I had saved from my much-loved rose and would stare at them until I fell asleep.
Gradho’s words kept ringing inside my head: Love over honour over sequence. Did Dante love me enough to defy everything he once believed in?

One morning, I woke up to a soft knock at my door. As I struggled to open my eyes following a late night of twisting and turning, Zaira called, “Alessia, are you awake yet? There are guests for you.”
I jumped out of bed and tripped, falling heavily onto the floor.
“Are you all right in there?”
“Yes, just a second.” I rose quickly and dashed to the door, almost tripping over yet again. Breathless, I gripped the door handle and swung it open.
“Another late night, was it?” She smiled, obviously gathering the sound of my not-so-subtle fall from the bed.
