Chapter Twelve

I sat down beside Luke and pulled the laptop in front of me to get a better look at Hutton’s record.

“Not a good guy. Drugs, assault, carjacking. Last arrested four years ago for assault in Liberty County. Convicted and received two years. Released early on probation. To give you an idea how well that worked, he’s currently wanted for probation violation.”

I pulled out my phone and contacted the Florida Department of Corrections. Five minutes later I had the number of his probation officer. I crossed my fingers that the man wasn’t too busy with storm prep to take my call. Luck was with me.

After providing my bona fides, I said, “I’m looking for information on Stevie Ray Hutton. I believe you’re his probation officer?”

“Hold on,” the man said, and I heard the clicking of a keyboard in the background. “I was. He came in for two visits and then disappeared, so he’s officially off my roles. I’m looking at his picture now. Yeah, I remember this guy. He gave me the creeps. There are men and women you think have got a good shot at making a decent life once they get out of prison. He wasn’t one of them. Stevie fell solidly into the hug-your-child-close-to-you category.”

“I think he’s turned up dead here,” I said.

“Let me be the first to say: good.”

“Unfortunately, he’d already done enough bad stuff to make us all happy he won’t be walking the streets anymore.”

“Killed?”

“Yes.”

“Sorry. Now you have to pretend to care and look for his killer.”

“Exactly. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we have a problem with identifying his body. He managed to scrape and burn his fingerprints off.”

“That probably made a lot of sense considering his career path. Not to worry, though, we should have his DNA on file.”

“That’s good, but it’s going to take a while to get our body’s DNA processed. You only saw him a couple of times, but is there anything you can remember that stood out and might help identify him? I didn’t see any notes in his record about identifiable scars.”

“Those arrest records aren’t always the most complete. I can pull up his prison record. That will have the best physical description. We might even have dental records.” There was more clicking, then he said, “You’re in luck. He had a couple busted teeth while in jail and got some dental work done. You know, I don’t get free dental care. Anyway, I can email you copies of his dental records.”

“Perfect.”

“Let me know if it’s him. I’ll do the work to get him entered into our system as deceased and start the paperwork to have his warrants rescinded.” I gave him my email and, before we’d said our goodbyes, the information was in my inbox.

“An efficient bureaucrat,” Luke observed.

“They make them.”

I dialed Dr. Darzi’s office. “Don’t you know there’s a hurricane bearing down on us?” he said in mock panic.

“And yet you’re still in your office.”

“I see my young interns getting all worked up.
