“I AM STUFFED!” Jenny said as she and Rob strolled back to her house.

Rob chuckled, tasting success. “Well, you had two helpings of everything. It did my heart good to watch you eat so well.”

Jenny patted her tummy. “It was delicious. I’ll have to exercise for an hour tomorrow to counteract my gluttony.”

Rob was about to argue with her, but bit his tongue. Trey was right. Jenny just wanted to be healthy. “How about we just take a stroll down Main tonight?”

“You have got to be sick of me by now,” she said softly.

“Not a chance, darlin’. I suggested the stroll because I’m not ready to let you go yet. And it’s still early. And I have the distinct feeling you won’t be inviting me in for a nightcap.”

She was quiet for a moment, and Rob held his breath. He couldn’t believe how much he loved her company. Supper had been filled with laughter and non-stop conversation. Jenny proved herself to be one of the smartest women Rob had ever had the pleasure to know. She could debate politics, talk sports and recommend books with the best of them.

Trey had been taken with her, too. On their way out the door, after Jenny had thanked his brother profusely then impulsively stood on tiptoe to plant a kiss on his cheek, Trey had blushed with pleasure. And as soon as Jenny had turned away toward the door, Trey had given Rob two thumbs-up—the highest of compliments the Townsend brothers bestowed.

“Was I being unfair in asking Trey for a regular Sunday meal, Rob? I mean, those meals will cost much more than the herbal salve.”

Rob laid a light hand on Jenny’s back as they crossed Juniper. “Not a chance, sweetheart. He was thrilled. He... doesn’t get much company, and he truly loves to show off his cooking.”

“If he doesn’t go out, how does he stock up on groceries?”

“The Grimes boy delivers to him twice a week.”

Jenny was silent for a moment. The night was balmy, the stars brilliant, the moon nearly full. The air smelled faintly of lilacs.

When they reached the other side of the street, Jenny stopped him with a hand to his arm. “Please, Rob, tell me the real reason Trey holes himself up in that big rambling house. I don’t know him all that well, but I can’t believe it’s shame. From what I heard, he got those scars being a hero. There’s no shame in that.”

“No, it’s not shame.” Rob took Jenny’s hand and tugged her along, for some reason not wanting to be looking into those doe eyes when he explained. “Did you know Trey was once married?”

Jenny gasped. “No, no I didn’t.” Her hand tightened in his. “Please don’t tell me she left him after the fire.”

“Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened.”

“Oh, poor Trey!” Jenny whispered.

Rob stiffened a little. He didn’t like the idea of anyone pitying his brother. Trey needed no one’s pity.

“What kind of woman would be so superficial?”

Rob relaxed. She didn’t pity Trey. But she sure as shootin’ was indignant on his behalf.
