Chapter Twenty-One: Rebel Yell

Very slowly through the night, Aidan continued walking towards the small bar called Greenwood's. The little neon lights flickered on and off, almost seeming like a beacon in the dark. Since his time in Bridgepoint, he had not encountered any Aristans. It wasn't like he was looking for them, or even expected them to have residence in this town, but his people liked to lay low and inconspicuous, and the outskirts of a little town like Bridgepoint probably was a perfect place. He hadn't been out this far and was glad the goddess blew the air downwind to pick up such a faint scent. In his contacts, he didn't know of an Aristan Haviscasi being set up here. So either it was done without sanction, or he was severely behind on news. Either way, it didn't matter. If they weren't on Kieran's side, then they would be on his, and he needed more feet on the ground if Bastien and Kieran were up to something.

He wanted to curb judgment or accusation on Bastien until he met the old wolf face to face, but he trusted Cam and Leigh and, despite it being a hunch, it all seemed pretty damning and plausible.

Aidan approached the steps, seeing a line of motorcycles of various styles parked outside. Walking to the door, the scent of Aristan got stronger, so he slowly walked into the bar. Though the outside was weathered and worn, it also was terribly deceptive, as the inside of the bar was very different. The hardwood floors and bar stools had a gloss to the wood. The mahogany bar was long, curving out into a semi-circle, and behind it were aisles of bottles with various liquors. A semi-modern jukebox was in the corner, playing a bluesy rock anthem while scattered patrons drank and shot pool.

A few Aristans stopped to turn and look at him, but briefly nodded and continued carrying on about their business.

As he walked towards the bar, he noticed a tall, curly haired Aristan male behind the bar, serving drinks to those sitting there. Quietly, Aidan walked up and made eye contact with the bartender.

Snow offered him a curt smile as Aidan sat to the bar. "Gravanos," he greeted Aidan in his native Aristan tongue.

Aidan gave a nod. "Gravanos, brother. What's your name?"

"Snow."

"Snow, I'm looking for the owner of this Haviscasi. Greenwood?"

Snow set a liquor bottle back on the shelf behind him. "Yeah. You mean Devin," he replied. "She's in the back by the loading dock." He pointed at an exit towards the back.

Aidan walked back until the clinking of glass got louder. On the loading dock, two Aristans were unloading alcohol onto the dollies. As the guy wheeled one dolly away, he noticed Aidan and smiled. "Devin, you've got company."

Her back still facing him, she lifted another crate and set it on the other dolly. "Yeah, yeah, just a second."

Aidan came closer to where the dock and the truck met. "You need a hand?"

Devin turned around, carrying another crate of whiskey and, with a grunt, settled the crate onto the others on the dolly.
