Leaving

When Solara and I returned to her house, Lachlan was nowhere to be seen, and the pristine white sectional had returned to its former glory.

“Where is he?” I asked, terrified that something horrible had happened.

“In the Healer’s Haven,” Solara assured me as she removed her black leather jacket to reveal a translucent black sweater that hugged every curve like a glove. I hadn’t thought it was possible, but now she looked even more impossibly confident than before. “He’ll be resting and somewhat sedated until his wounds are fully healed. It’s the safest path for him.”

She showed me to my bedroom—a large, beautiful chamber with a wall of windows at the far end that looked out to the mountain peaks in the distance. I felt like I’d walked into a chalet in Colorado after a day of downhill skiing.

On the bed—a queen-sized, white linen-coated luxury item—was a set of clothing. Black pants, similar to Solara’s. A black tank top and black sweater with bell sleeves and an open neck, as well as some undergarments.

“You’re really willing to lend me these?” I asked, feeling the soft leather of the pants.

“You can keep them,” she laughed, “provided you succeed. Hell, keep them even if you don’t. One day soon, however, I suspect you’ll learn to summon your own clothing.”

“I already can,” I said in a slightly sheepish tone. “But it disappears after a while, when the spell breaks.”

“It doesn’t need to, you know. You underestimate your powers, I’m afraid. Perhaps as you grow into them, you’ll learn just how skilled you really are.”

“I hope so,” I gushed, turning her way to see that she was smiling at me. “I really don’t know how to express my gratitude for everything you and the others have done for us.”

“Don’t thank me yet. Our work isn’t done.” She looked over at the bed. “Now, why don’t you have a nap? I’ll send up some food when the time comes. Your top priority at the moment should be sleep. You’ll need your wits about you tomorrow.”

A sudden heaviness overtook me then, like she’d drugged me with her words. As she scooped the clothing off the bed and laid it over a nearby chair, I nodded, crawled under the covers, and closed my eyes.
