At nine P.M., long after the sun had set, I texted Liv to tell her we were on our way into the woods.

Callum and I, dressed in autumn jackets, jeans, and hiking boots, headed out in search of the Murder Shack.

But the second we took our first step into the darkness of the dense forest, I began to question my sanity for ever suggesting the outing.

Only a couple of weeks ago, a killer hired by some powerful entity in the Otherwhere had lunged at me on the beach in Mabel’s Cove. A killer with eyes that could see through my Shadow form and fangs that looked like they could shear through metal.

A killer who’d incapacitated Lachlan for days.

Now we were about to walk into an isolated bit of forest where that very assassin could easily be waiting for us.

“I must be nuts,” I said as we trudged along, the flashlight on my cell phone lighting our way. “I should have suggested we do this tomorrow morning instead.” Every little sound around us was an alert, every snapping branch a warning of coming doom. “What if something happens to Liv?”

“She’ll be fine,” Callum said. “It’s unlikely anyone would dare go near her. She’s with Lachlan, remember?”

“Please, don’t remind me about her ill-advised one-sided love affair,” I muttered.

“I’m just saying she’s probably quite safe. Besides, this shack of yours can’t be too far into the woods, can it?”

“No, only a few minutes in,” I replied, keeping my eyes peeled for the white marks painted on the tree bark that had always guided our route to the rickety old structure.

I finally found the first white streak, then another, and within a few minutes, we arrived at the small clearing I remembered so well from my youth.

As I turned to look for the Murder Shack, the light from my phone reflected off the small building’s one window like a glowing eye peering out at us. I jumped and let out a shriek…then burst out laughing at my own expense.

“Freaked myself out,” I said apologetically.

“I know. It was adorable.”

I grabbed Callum’s hand, leading him quietly forward.

“Hey…you’re shaking,” he said, pulling himself close.

“I can’t explain it,” I whispered. “I’m not scared, not exactly. It’s just…I have that feeling I get sometimes. Like something is about to happen, but I can’t quite figure out if it’s good or bad.”

“Or possibly both?”

I nodded as I reached for the shack’s decrepit door. So strange to feel its handle under my fingers.

For months, the only mysterious doors I’d come across were the ones I’d summoned myself. But now, I was on the verge of opening a door that felt more terrifyingly arcane than any Breach ever could.

The door moved inward with a long, high-pitched creak that raised the hairs on the back of my neck.

A streak of pale light illuminated the floor where the moon shone through the small window. Callum and I stepped inside and proceeded to wander slowly around the small room, noting the old newspaper clippings that still clung to the walls like crude wallpaper, even after all these years.
