Bristlecone, Colorado

Present Day

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

The noise nearly made Owen drop the flask he was holding onto the tile floor. His heart pounded too fast as he carefully set the glass container on the counter and glanced down the hallway to the door. This was a useless motion since the door was solid wood and it was closed. He couldn’t see through the peephole from here.

It must be the tenants, he supposed. They’d have seen his car outside, and perhaps heard him moving around down here. They rarely bothered him when he spent time here, but sometimes they needed something or were holding a particularly large package for him, so he made his way past the boxes and to the door. Although he was almost positive it would be one or both of the tenants—they were a young couple—he flipped on the switch to the back-porch light and peered through the peephole.

It wasn’t the tenants.

His fingers scrambled to undo the locks, getting the door open almost just in time to nearly get a fist to his face as the young woman outside raised it to knock again.

“Oops! Sorry!” she said, putting her hand down.

“Lex! What are you doing here?”

Lexie raised an eyebrow, glancing behind him at the piles in the hallway. “I could ask you the same question.”

“I’m... You know I come here sometimes.” He took a step backward so she could join him inside. She didn’t hesitate and was halfway down the hall by the time he got the door closed again.

“I guess you did need to make a visit.” Lexie glanced at the labels on several of the boxes before she selected one, lifting it up to carry it with her as she walked into the lab. “It’s just that usually you tell me. Usually, you ask if I want to come with you.”

His face grew a little warm. She was right, usually, he did. But this time he hadn’t actually planned on returning to Bristlecone. And he couldn’t exactly tell her about the real purpose of his trip. “I thought you were too busy with your residency application.”

One of her eyebrows quirked into a perfect v. “Are we going to discuss that now?”

Now it was altogether too hot in the basement. “No. We’re not. So... How did you know where I was, anyway? I thought you were taking all those applications to the beach with Noah for a few weeks?”

“I broke up with Noah.”

“Whaaat?”

“Actually, I’m just kidding. But I talked to your mom the other night and it was kind of an... unusual call, I guess. She said you were in Montana, and you never told me about going to Montana, so I got curious and...” She pulled her phone out of her pocket and held the screen toward him. Even from a few feet away, he knew the little blinking light on the map was his own phone.

“Traitor,” he mumbled in the direction of his pocket.

“Are you actually mad?” Lexie asked, setting the box down on the only clear counter in the lab.
