Chapter Eighteen

Bunches of flowers had been laid outside the humble council flat and Grace took care not to tread on any as she leant over and knocked on the door.

“Is this really necessary?” Ryan whispered. “So, they got their dinners mixed up. They’d just found out their daughter had been murdered, I’m sure what they had for tea wasn’t the most important thing on their minds.”

“It may seem petty to you but it means she wasn’t here when they said she was which affects the timeline.”

Grace held her gaze as if daring him to question her authority again and he responded with a nod of acknowledgement to pacify her before someone answered.

“Tammy, sorry to bother you but we need to ask you a couple of questions if that’s okay?”

“Well, er, we were just about to leave for the vigil.”

Grace noticed she had her coat on and her handbag was resting on her shoulder.

“I promise it won’t take long.”

They stepped inside and followed her down the hallway to where Dean was slouched on the sofa drinking lager from a can.

“Have you found who did it?”

He immediately sat upright and placed his can down on the small coffee table, his eyes wide with anticipation as he searched Grace’s face for a hint of good news.

“I’m afraid not, we’ve still got to follow up on several leads.”

The optimism melted from his face and he slunk back down into the seat as if her response had deflated his entire body.

“I know you’re about to set off to the vigil but we need to ask you a couple of quick questions before you go. It won’t take long.”

He let out a sigh, blowing his lips forward as he let the last of the hope from his lungs go.

“Was there any link between Katie and the construction workers for this new development?”

She sensed Ryan’s head jolt to look at her as her line of questioning took him by surprise and she deliberately ignored it.

“No,” he replied, shaking his head as he scanned his mind for a link. “Not that I can think of. She organised meetings with the community and sorted demonstrations to stop the developments, but I don’t remember her ever having anything to do with the workers.”

Dean’s anger rose again as he pushed himself up from the sofa and Ryan took half a step forward in case another burst of rage was triggered.

“Do you think it’s one of those immigrants that drink in our local?”

“Not at this point, I’m just trying to establish if there were any incidents between them, that’s all.”

He cocked his head to the side and gave her a sideways look as if searching for any hint she may be lying and she moved the questioning on before his mind blew the situation out of proportion.

“There’s just one more thing and I know it sounds trivial but I need to get the facts right so the timeline fits.”

“Go on, I’ve told you everything.”

“Hmm. You said you all had dinner around six?”

Dean frowned at the seemingly trivial question and crossed his arms.
