CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Mia sat in the back of the police cruiser, her body adhering to the vinyl seats with sweat. The officer had the air conditioner blasting, but it wasnât helping at all.
Iâm so screwed, she thought as she held her cuffed hands in her lap and stared out across the highway. Meanwhile, the officer was taking his time, sitting in front of her, filling out some paperwork. It was almost as if he wanted to prolong her misery.
She could just see it nowâarriving to police headquarters, where the feds, including that U.S. Marshal Kane Wilcox, were waiting smugly, ready to take her into custody. Her name and likeness would be plastered all over national news, causing even more grief for her family.
At the thought, her eyes pricked with tears, but she blinked them back.
No, Mia. Think. Youâve got to get yourself out of this. You can do it.
Gnawing on the inside of her cheek, she analyzed her options. The officer was a little careless, yes, and seemed to be a good man with a soft spot. She had to think of a way out that wouldnât hurt him too badly, which narrowed her options. Killing an officer wouldnât help her case. She was desperate, but not desperate enough to risk another personâs life to escape.
She leaned forward in the seat, so she was close to the cage separating her from the officer. âExcuse me,â she said politely. âIs this going to take much longer?â
He grunted, not looking up from his paperwork. âItâll take as long as it takes.â
She looked around. She had to do something, and quickly. Use the Iâve got to go to the bathroom ploy? No, that one had been used a thousand times. Heâd be onto her. If she wanted to get free of these handcuffs, she had to think outside the box.
Mia spotted a bee, tapping its body up against the glass of the window nearest her. After a moment, it came to rest on the lip of the window, which was open an inch. Great. Bees loved her. They also loved stinging her, for doing nothing wrong.
Donât come in here, she thought silently staring up at the insect. The last thing I want to do is be stung.
At least she wasnât allergic. There was a boy in Kelseyâs class that had been so allergic, he had to carry an epi-pen everywhere and went into hysterics, every time a bee even flew past their classroom window at school.
Suddenly, she had an idea.
She leaned forward again. âOfficer, thereâs a bee in here,â she said.
âHmm,â he said, disinterested. âWhat do you want me to do about it?â
âIâm allergic to bees. If I get stung, my throat closes up. Itâs really bad. I could die.â She watched as the bee took flight in the cabin of the car, buzzing harmlessly toward the overhead light. âLook!â
The officer glanced in the rearview mirror, tilting his head, and mustâve finally seen the bee, because he said, âAll right, relax,â and moved to get out of the car.
