FREDERICK DOUGLASS NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

Established: 1962 — Washington, D.C.

Frederick Douglass was born a slave on a plantation in 1818 and escaped slavery as a teenager. He became a leading advocate for abolition and in 1876 was the first black person appointed to a federal position requiring Senate approval. After his death in 1895, his wife started the Frederick Douglass Memorial Association, which maintained his home in Washington, D.C., until 1962 when the National Park Service received the deed to restore and preserve the house and his legacy.
