Chapter 6

Sam entered the pint-sized hotel room on wobbly legs. She wasn't going to faint again—it was humiliating enough that she'd done that once—but her sexual excitement at being in a small bedroom with Chad warred with the barrage of questions she burned to ask.

Behind her, the door clicked closed. Immediately, she shoved the wolf discovery to the back of her mind. Oddly, now that she'd deduced the truth about Chad—or figured she had—it didn't bother her. It only added another layer of sexy to him.

She'd never guessed that a werewolf could be sexy—they were supposed to be ghastly drooling beasts with primitive communication skills—but now that she knew one, it was dangerous, thrilling and exotically alluring.

But in this exact moment, she had more pressing things to think about. With each step into the modest room, the reality of their sleeping situation became more concrete. This was the room where she was going to spend the night with Chad. In the same bed.

Her skin tingled.

She hit the light switch and a pale golden glow flickered to life from deeper inside the room. She moved forward, passing the small door to her left, which she assumed led to the bathroom. The room was a study in browns—brown striped wallpaper, dark brown drapes, ugly brown carpet—but that wasn't what made her stomach flip. She froze as soon as the bed came into view, complete with its hideous brown floral bedspread.

She'd forgotten how small a double bed was. She'd had a queen her entire adult life. Every hotel they stayed in while doing research included a king. And now she was supposed to sleep on that postage stamp mattress with Chad.

Her pulse kicked up.

If he was a wolf, would he be able to pick up on things like her pulse racing or the smell of her arousal? That was unsettling.

"Um, Sam?" He sounded tentative. "Why don't you stay here and rest? I'll go and grab our bags."

"No, I can help. I'm not an invalid."

Chad wrapped his hand under her elbow. His touch sent a shiver over her. He steered her deeper into the room then paused. Whoever decorated this place had had a frugal streak. The only place to sit was the bed.

Chad's body pressed against her side as he guided her to that itty bitty bed. Her heart hammered in her chest. He turned her and placed his hands on her shoulders to encourage her to sit on the mattress.

"Oh," she murmured when she lost her balance on her way down. The bed was lower than she'd anticipated.

"What happened?" Worry creased his forehead and his grip on her shoulders tightened.

"It's just a low bed, that's all."

He took a deep breath, as if to steady his nerves, then he loosened his hold on her after one last lingering squeeze. He tossed his gloves on the nightstand and crouched in front of her. His face was creased with worry as he reached for her parka. She stared at his fingers as they wrapped around the zipper pull and tugged.
