CHAPTER 13

Cole

My legs trembled after making love standing up twice in a row, but I didn’t want to put her down, not yet. Having Madison this close, being alone with her, this was paradise. She made it easy to forget about the rest of the world. Deidra Harlow and the Transparency Collective didn’t exist here. With Madison in my arms, I could see a future.

I kissed her again. “Want to swim with me?”

Her lips curved. “I am pretty sweaty.” Her gaze shifted over my shoulder at the water behind me. “But I’m not a great swimmer.”

I shook my head. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

She started to unwrap her legs from my waist, but I squeezed her ass in response. “I can carry you.”

She chuckled. “Aren’t you tired yet?”

“Exhausted.” I chuckled. “But I can still make it to the water.”

“You’re going to spoil me.” She laughed and nipped at my shoulder until I was pulsing inside her again.

“All part of my plan,” I whispered against her ear.

I walked into the cool, fresh water, wading in until we were chest deep. She unclasped her legs but kept her arms tight around my neck.

“I can’t touch the bottom here,” she said.

I keep my hands on her waist. “I’ve got you.”

Shadows lined her eyes, and her gaze grew distant. I’d seen this look on our hike earlier. Shit. I started to pull her back toward the shallow water.

“No.” She gripped my shoulders. “Wait.”

I froze, all my attention on her face. “Do you hear it again?”

“No.” She stared into the darkness. “It’s the water.” Her squeezed her eyes closed. “I see a pool. No, it’s like an egg with water inside, like a pool.” Her nails were starting to dig into my skin. “It’s me and…her.” Madison gasped as her eyes snapped open. “Ridgemont.”

I frowned. “Is that a place?”

“I think so.” With a determined glint in her eyes, she let go of me and pushed backward, treading water. I stayed close in case she sank, not understanding what was happening, but I trusted her and her gift, or whatever it was.

“Come on,” she whispered. “I’m in the water.” She splashed, turning herself in a circle. “Why isn’t it working anymore? Why can’t I remember?”

I was so far out of the loop. “About Ridgemont?”

She finally met my eyes. “Being in this water, I remembered something. It wasn’t like before. I didn’t hear her voice, but I saw her. We were floating in a dark pool, holding hands.”

“You think she’s the one you’re hearing?”

“Yes.” Madison came back to me, hanging on to my neck. “I don’t know how, but I’m sure it’s her. None of this makes sense.” She smacked the surface of the pond with one hand. “What does any of this mean? I can’t tell if they’re really memories I somehow forgot, or maybe I imagined it. I’m not sure what to think.”

I stroked her back, wishing I could relieve her tension. Emotions and stress made it tough to think clearly. I struggled with it when I’d first started practicing as a vet.
