Chapter 21

Now, even George Rossi was telling me there was magic at Tahoe. Apparently, we paranormals were not as good as I thought at keeping a secret. My foot tapped impatiently. I was still too wound up to go home.

One more stop.

I found Gunnar on the casino floor. Sliding in behind one of the security cameras, I watched him study the casino guests, a bored look on his face.

He gave a little chin nod to someone on the other side of a bank of computers, but I couldn’t see who it was.

When he came close to the camera, I slipped behind him, pretty sure he would know I was there. He kept his shifter sense on high alert when he was on the casino floor.

“What’s up, Celia?” He spoke without looking at me, his eyes on the casino customers. “Why are you back?”

“Slow night, Gunnar?”

He didn’t turn around, knowing I was off camera. “You know I could get into trouble just for talking to you, don’t you? Why don’t we meet in the office?”

I chuckled. “Sorry to put you in this position, but I thought you might have information for me.”

At this, he did turn around, surprise written on his face. “About what?”

I glanced around to make sure no one was nearby, then leaned toward him. “I talked to a couple of people who were nearby when the attacks occurred. They said they smelled…” I paused, more for effect than anything else. “… wet dog.”

Gunnar leaned back to look me in the eyes, concern on his face. “Seriously?”

“Afraid so. Have you heard anything from the pack? I hate to ask that, you know I do, but I have to ask.”

Gunnar breathed deeply, turning his eyes back to the casino floor. “I don’t know, Celia. I don’t think I can break the pack code.”

“Gunnar, please.” I was pleading now, and I didn’t like how it sounded on me. “Maybe someone was trying to game the system and things got out of hand. Maybe they didn’t mean to kill Julian or hurt Cali.”

I didn’t actually believe that, but I had to put it out there if it would make Gunnar feel better about throwing a pack member under the bus.

He looked back at me, his eyes edged with worry. “I’ll put out some feelers. I just don’t think it’s one of us.”

“But the wet dog smell…”

“Could have been anything,” he snapped. “Other things smell like wet dog, did you think of that?”

No, I hadn’t, because everyone knew that shifters often left traces behind when they shifted back. Most of the shapeshifters around Tahoe were either wolves, like Gunnar, or bears, although a small variety of other shifters lived in the area.

Gunnar went on. “Maybe someone shifted, but it didn’t have anything to do with the attacks.”

“Then they might have information that could help clear my name,” I said quietly.

He reached out and patted my shoulder awkwardly. “I’ll see what I can find out, but don’t expect much.”

I smiled weakly. “Thanks, buddy.”

He chucked his chin toward the exit.
