Not quite understanding how she got there, an hour later Carly found herself sitting on a beautiful plush couch in Leo’s house, munching on fried chicken. Leo sat across the room from her digging into the shrimp and coleslaw.

Leo lived in a small white cape cod house with blue shutters and trim within walking distance of the ocean. In fact, one had beautiful views of the Atlantic from the windows on two sides of the charming little home. His living room was wall to wall plush carpet with soft, overstuffed furniture and Birdseye maple tables. Floor to ceiling closeable drapes accented the windows. The dining room boasted a small table and chairs made of curved walnut. His kitchen was small but amply supplied with appliances, all brushed steel. His counters were a shell-pink marble. The blue and green color scheme reminded Carly of being underwater. The overall feeling was comfortable yet mysterious. Who was Leo Delmar? He had said he was a recent transplant from the Caribbean, but this house screamed permanent, not temporary. Unless we were subletting from a mermaid. He still wasn’t talking, maintaining that the conversation could wait while the food was still hot.

Carly blotted the grease from her lips with a cheap paper napkin and took a long swallow from her beer. She placed the bottle on Leo’s coffee table, crossed her arms, and stared at him.

Leo noticed her watching him and met her stare with his own. She was determined to outsit him and firmly pressed her lips together. He grinned and kept eating. When he finally finished his dinner, Leo chugged back his beer and set his empty on the table as well. A small belch escaped his lips and he chuckled. A serious look stole into his eyes and Leo stood and wandered over to his window, staring out at the ocean.

“In the year sixteen sixty-eight, a ship was launched from Southampton, England, bound for the colonies,” he murmured. “The ship was christened The Whirlwind and there were fifty-seven souls aboard, fleeing persecution for their religious beliefs.”

“Puritans?” Carly asked.

“No,” he said, turning toward her. “Witches.”

A chuckle escaped Carly’s lips, but she suppressed her mirth at the stern look on Leo’s face. “Are you trying to tell me they were real witches?”

“Real enough.” He returned to gazing out the window. “They were making their way to New England, specifically the Massachusetts Colony to join family and coven members. They were bringing money, dry goods, some animals like sheep and poultry, and other sundry items that their kindred had left behind. They also had some charmed and magical amulets on board, including one in the form of a charmed coin. Of perhaps I should say a cursed coin.”

“A cursed coin.” Carly stared at him in disbelief. She didn’t know if he was jerking her around or if he was mentally unstable. “Do you expect me to believe any of this?”

Leo looked at her sadly. “Would you please let me finish the story before you judge?”

Carly was torn.
