Chapter 18 The Law in Her Hands
Pestering the police was one of Amaryllisâs favourite pastimes. Not that she wanted to get in their way just for the fun of it. In the case of the attack on Jock, her aim was only to make sure they didnât lose focus or get distracted by something she considered more trivial, including but not limited to burglaries from people in large houses who should have put better security arrangements in place, and internet fraud committed against people who should have had more sense than to be taken in by dodgy emails from gangsters pretending to be foreign lottery operators.
Hamish was in fine form this morning, tugging on the lead as she walked briskly up the High Street, snarling at the newsagentâs advertising board when it wobbled in his direction, and wagging his tail frantically at Maisie Sue as she approached.
âHeâs such a precious wee thing. Arenât you?â Maisie Sue crouched down and spoke directly to the dog, who licked her face enthusiastically. She struggled to her feet again. âSo youâre the chief dog-walker for now, are you, Amaryllis?â
âYou could say that. Have you had the window fixed yet?â
Maisie Sue made a face. âIâm on my way to meet with the glazier now.â
âHave the police said any more?â
âI guess theyâve lost interest,â said Maisie Sue sadly. âThere are always more crimes being committed. They canât spare the time to deal with my little problem.â
âHmm,â said Amaryllis. Evidently she needed to nudge them into action about Maisie Sueâs window too. âIâm on my way to the police station now. Iâll let them know you arenât happy with them.â
âOh, no, donât do that!â exclaimed Maisie Sue. âIâm sure theyâll look into it when they have a minute.â
She gave a little wave to Hamish as she went off down the hill.
It was well past time to put the plan into place for looking after Maisie Sue. Amaryllis knew she needed to call on Penelope after seeing the police and Jock. It was turning out to be a full-time job keeping up with this latest outbreak of mayhem in Pitkirtly. For the first time in a while, Amaryllis felt as if there was a serious danger that the forces of evil might triumph. Odd â the last time she remembered feeling like this was back in Belgrade just before the war broke out. And yet Pitkirtly was a long way from Serbia, thank goodness.
Sergeant Macdonald was far from ecstatic to see her and Hamish.
âWhatever it is, the answer is no,â he said immediately.
âWhat if Iâve come to give myself up and ask for fifteen other crimes to be taken into consideration?â she retorted.
He gave her a look. âNow, you know and I know that isnât going to happen. What do you really want?â
âIâm a concerned citizen and I want to be sure youâre giving due attention to a number of serious local crimes.â
He sighed. âYouâd have to speak to Mrs Ramsay about that. I canât comment officially.â
âIs Mrs
