Chapter 18 The Law in Her Hands

Pestering the police was one of Amaryllis’s favourite pastimes. Not that she wanted to get in their way just for the fun of it. In the case of the attack on Jock, her aim was only to make sure they didn’t lose focus or get distracted by something she considered more trivial, including but not limited to burglaries from people in large houses who should have put better security arrangements in place, and internet fraud committed against people who should have had more sense than to be taken in by dodgy emails from gangsters pretending to be foreign lottery operators.

Hamish was in fine form this morning, tugging on the lead as she walked briskly up the High Street, snarling at the newsagent’s advertising board when it wobbled in his direction, and wagging his tail frantically at Maisie Sue as she approached.

‘He’s such a precious wee thing. Aren’t you?’ Maisie Sue crouched down and spoke directly to the dog, who licked her face enthusiastically. She struggled to her feet again. ‘So you’re the chief dog-walker for now, are you, Amaryllis?’

‘You could say that. Have you had the window fixed yet?’

Maisie Sue made a face. ‘I’m on my way to meet with the glazier now.’

‘Have the police said any more?’

‘I guess they’ve lost interest,’ said Maisie Sue sadly. ‘There are always more crimes being committed. They can’t spare the time to deal with my little problem.’

‘Hmm,’ said Amaryllis. Evidently she needed to nudge them into action about Maisie Sue’s window too. ‘I’m on my way to the police station now. I’ll let them know you aren’t happy with them.’

‘Oh, no, don’t do that!’ exclaimed Maisie Sue. ‘I’m sure they’ll look into it when they have a minute.’

She gave a little wave to Hamish as she went off down the hill.

It was well past time to put the plan into place for looking after Maisie Sue. Amaryllis knew she needed to call on Penelope after seeing the police and Jock. It was turning out to be a full-time job keeping up with this latest outbreak of mayhem in Pitkirtly. For the first time in a while, Amaryllis felt as if there was a serious danger that the forces of evil might triumph. Odd – the last time she remembered feeling like this was back in Belgrade just before the war broke out. And yet Pitkirtly was a long way from Serbia, thank goodness.

Sergeant Macdonald was far from ecstatic to see her and Hamish.

‘Whatever it is, the answer is no,’ he said immediately.

‘What if I’ve come to give myself up and ask for fifteen other crimes to be taken into consideration?’ she retorted.

He gave her a look. ‘Now, you know and I know that isn’t going to happen. What do you really want?’

‘I’m a concerned citizen and I want to be sure you’re giving due attention to a number of serious local crimes.’

He sighed. ‘You’d have to speak to Mrs Ramsay about that. I can’t comment officially.’

‘Is Mrs
