I do not create a complex mental identity that I track and associate with each person. Rather, for most simple acquaintances, I’ll remember very little beyond the raw utilitarian –– perhaps what they do and what they know. If you’re the captain of a cruise ship, or you know how to tie a double Windsor knot, those are the things I remember about you most.
