Chapter ten

Lucy had been anxious about this meeting for days. Her stomach did flip-flops as she pulled up to the small retirement facility to meet with Leann Spencer. The facility was an old pink brick building with forest green shutters. Lucy could tell this was once a high-end facility that had experienced years of neglect and had fallen into disarray.

Lucy looked over the notes in her notebook to remind herself of the most important things she wanted to discuss with Leann. If this meeting went well, it would go a long way in helping the Historical Society get closer to solving a big piece of town history. As Lucy slipped her notebook back into her bag, she ran her fingers over the glossy cover and reflected on how she got so lucky to have friends like Brandy.

Lucy stepped out of her little red pickup truck and looked down at the address in her hand to make sure she remembered which unit to visit. She mentally rehearsed the talking points Brandy and Julian helped her create before the meeting. Lucy made her way up the sidewalk and scanned the numbers on the residents’ doors as she carefully looked for Leann’s apartment number.

As she made her way down the sidewalk, she took note of the unkempt grass and overgrown flower beds. She thought back to Jack and how he would never have allowed the Gilmer estate to look like this.

She spotted Leann’s apartment and made her way towards the door. A “Welcome Spring” wreath covered in pastel blooms hung in the center of the dark green door. A well-worn welcome mat was carefully positioned just in front of the door.

Lucy took a deep breath and knocked. As she waited, Lucy rocked back and forth on her heels in an attempt to release some of the nervous energy building inside her. She mentally ran through her checklist again for practice.

Leann, the seventy-nine-year-old woman Lucy had seen at the town council meeting finally opened the door wearing a matching pastel yellow sweat suit and plush, pink house slippers on her feet.

“Hello, Ms. Leann?” Lucy asked with a smile.

Leann grumbled a greeting and stepped back from the door granting Lucy entry to the small, but tidy apartment.

As Lucy stepped into the living area of the apartment, she noticed the faded rose-colored carpet, gray walls, and over-stuffed blue furniture. Small knickknacks and figurines were prominently displayed on every surface.

Lucy smiled to herself as she considered the effort Leann had taken to cultivate such a collection.

“Ms. Leann, thank you so much for taking the time to speak to me today,” Lucy began as she stood in the small living room. Leann gestured for Lucy to take a seat on the small loveseat against the wall as she disappeared into the kitchen. Lucy carefully sat down as she took in her surroundings. After a moment, Leann came back with a small tray of tea and cookies. She placed it on the small coffee table positioned between the loveseat and an oversized chair.
