Now look through the diagrams in the following table showing all 64 hexagrams, and see which one you have drawn. Note down the number of the hexagram and look up its meaning in the table on page 115.

DIVINING WITH YARROW STICKS

If you want to be more “Chinese” and use sticks for your reading, you can do so. Wooden vases containing sticks (which, nowadays, are actually unlikely to be made from yarrow) are sold in Chinese areas and tourist shops. Each stick is numbered both in Chinese and in English. Prepare for your I Ching reading in the same way as I outlined above, then take the vase, hold it out horizontally in front of you and shake it until a few sticks protrude. Take the three sticks that protrude the furthest and consider the numbers written on them. Odd numbers represent Yang and even numbers represent Yin. From there, it is easy to continue as per the instructions for throwing coins.
