“That was our turn,” Luca said.

“Huh?”

“Are you tired, spaced out, or just daydreaming about Brie again?”

Guilty as charged. And fuck it, I’d driven right past the end of Joe McIntyre’s driveway. Traffic was light on the highway south of Baldwin’s Shore, so I did a U-turn and pointed the patrol car back the way we’d come.

“I told Brie this morning that I want a future with her.”

Luca sucked in a breath.

“What?” I asked.

“You don’t think you’re moving kinda fast? What happened to dating first?”

“Just because you took a decade to tell Brooke how you felt doesn’t mean the rest of us have to dither.”

“How well do you know Brie? I don’t want to sound negative, and she seems like a nice woman, but you don’t think she’s cagey?” Luca snorted. “Although Brooke used the word ‘mysterious.’”

“Yeah, she has issues, her family mainly, but she’s started to open up. I’m not going to push her, but I don’t want to let her go either.”

“What sort of family issues?”

“Apart from the cheating fiancé? Her mother’s pushy and tries to run her life, and her father’s in a coma from an accident Brie blames herself for. Plus there’s a brother and a sister, but I don’t know much about them.”

“A coma? Shit.”

“Yeah, for three years. She hates talking about it, and she seems closer to her friend Phil than any of them.”

“Her best friend’s a guy?”

“I made that mistake too. Phil’s a girl. As I said, Brie’s talking, but she’s also hurting, so I’ll let her take her time.”

“Did you try checking her social media?”

“She doesn’t use social media.” I sighed. “But I tried googling her, and the only Brie Westerburg that comes up is a porn star.”

Embarrassingly, I wasn’t even sure how to spell her name. But I’d tried every possible combination of Bree and Brie and Westerberg and Westerburg in order to cover all bases.

Luca glanced sideways at me as I slowed to turn into Joe McIntyre’s driveway. “You don’t think…? I mean, she’s got a great rack.”

“Shut the fuck up, man.” Although I’d had the same thought. And from the back, porn-Brie had looked similar, so I’d watched the whole damn video of her sucking some chiselled guy off, feeling sicker and sicker, only to realise when she turned around that she was a completely different person. And my Brie’s rack was definitely natural. Spectacular, perfect, and real. “That’s my future wife you’re talking about.”

“Future wife? Are you serious?”

“How old was I when I told you I was gonna marry Hannah?”

Luca fell silent for a moment, remembering that day at the diner and probably his laughter too. “Fifteen?”

“And how long had I known her?”

“Like, a week?”

“Precisely. Because I knew she was right for me. And I did marry her. We’d still be married today if… Fuck.”

My throat tightened, and I swallowed hard. I wasn’t replacing Hannah—she was irreplaceable—and I was at a new point in my life, but it still hurt to remember what I’d lost.

“Sorry, buddy. Shit, I’m sorry. And I get it—you fall fast, and you fall hard.
