After the toasts, she saw Tom standing a little apart, and went to join him. He was trying to spear a cherry tomato with a plastic fork as his paper plate buckled and bent. With his cream linen jacket, powder-blue shirt and red and white tie, he looked very handsome indeed.

“You look gorgeous,” he said with a smile. “That colour really suits you.”

“Thanks, Tom. So do you, and it’s good to see you again,” Jude replied. “I was really grateful for your support, you know, with the roof and all the building work.”

“I enjoyed myself on Anglesey, and I’m glad to help you in any way I can going forward, with builders, bikes, and babies,” he said. An awkward silence followed, in which they both recalled what else they’d done that weekend, and its possible consequences. When he stabbed at the tomato so hard that it ricocheted away onto the grass, they giggled, which broke the tension immediately. “Why don’t we meet up for lunch, or dinner? I’d love to see you more often now that you’re back. No strings attached, of course.”

Jude met his gaze and held it. Could she tell him now, in the middle of this lovely party, that she was pregnant with his child? It seemed unkind to spring it on him in public, but he needed to know, and soon.

“How about lunch tomorrow?” she said, her heart pounding.

“Great, yes,” he replied, clearly surprised. “Browns at 1pm suit you?”

“Perfect. And could you possibly get me a glass of cold water?” she asked, suddenly in desperate need of some time alone.

As he scurried off, she sat down and thought how strange it was that she was carrying Tom’s child while his friend, her beloved Alex, was dead, his ashes boxed and buried in a churchyard on the other side of the city. That thought stayed with her as she tried to sleep that night, and the prospect of telling Tom what huge changes lay ahead for both of them weighed heavy.
