We left Schooner’s and collected the rest of the club from the ice cream shop. We filled them in on our conversation with the couple as we walked the several blocks over to Islanders Pub to take another stab at finding Carlos and chatting up the locals.

Marcie gave us a warm welcome and we ordered a round of beers.

“You all can’t be having a mug of beer at every tavern,” said Moonbeam, sipping the last of her soda water. “We need to keep our wits about us.”

“Yes, Mother,” snorted Sebastian.

Forrest giggled and tried to hide it by sipping his ginger ale loudly through his straw.

“Don’t be concerned, Moonbeam,” said Atticus. “We ordered sodas on our visit with the Osbornes.”

Then Sebastian ruined Atticus’s serious response by raising his beer mug in a toast to the group. “To the magnificent Ordinaries!” Zell and Valeria happily tapped their glasses with his.

“And where is my bowl of ale?” asked Frank.

“You’re a cat,” said Moonbeam.

“A cat-man, I’ll have you know. And I’m not adverse to a bowl of dark ale.”

“How about some nice root beer?” asked Sebastian.

“Fine,” huffed Frank.

“And when are you going to stop dropping hints and tell us your backstory?” asked Sebastian. “We’re all dying to know.”

“You flag down that server over there and get my beverage, and I’ll think about it,” said Frank.

Sebastian did as Frank asked and ordered a root beer and a bowl.

The server brought over the order and Sebastian filled the bowl. He placed it on the table in front of Frank who took several delicate licks. He murmured sounds of delight and licked the foam off his chin.

“Well?” said Forrest, tapping the table in front of Frank.

“Well, what?” said Frank.

“Your story?”

“I said I’d think about it. I’m thinking about it,” Frank mumbled as he joyfully lapped up his root beer.

Zell snorted with laughter and hit the table in front of her. “Good one, Frankie.”

Marcie came back to our table to see if we needed anything else. Her brows rose at the cat on the table lapping up the root beer, but she didn’t say a word.

“If y’all are still looking for Carlos, you just missed him.”

“Oh, no!” said Moonbeam.

“Do you know where he went off to?” asked Atticus.

“He mentioned he was meeting a friend at the Barnacle Tavern.”

“Where’s that?” I asked.

“Three blocks west of here.” Marcie answered, then she saw the look on my face and interpreted it correctly.

“We’re a small island town, Paige. Taverns and restaurants abound for the locals and tourists alike. Not much else to do around here in the evening.” She waved her hand dramatically and we laughed.

Marcie turned to leave, but Glo stopped her with a tap on her arm. “Do you know if Lewis is back in town yet?”

“Huh. No. Now that you mention it, I haven’t seen him around. But you know, I don’t work every night, so I might have missed him.”

“Thanks, Marcie! Have a good evening.”

Moonbeam put up such a fuss that we didn’t finish our beers.
