‘I’m so sorry, Ella. I should have been honest with you from the start. Please forgive me,’ Conor said when I walked into the kitchen in the morning.

His beautiful eyes were red-rimmed, and he looked like a broken man. There was a vulnerability about him that I’d never seen before; it was something he would usually hide at all costs. In my eyes, that went some way to redeem the mistakes he’d made. It showed me that he was letting his guard down and finally letting me inside. Maybe we would be able to rebuild the trust if we tried hard enough. I felt compelled to give him one more chance; the pull towards Conor was too strong for me to resist.

‘This probably sounds like a pathetic excuse, but the longer I kept what I did for a living secret, the harder it was to come clean about it.’ Conor cast his eyes to the floor.

I understood that logic, but it didn’t make it right. Now that I knew what Conor had been hiding, it explained a lot of things. He was extremely suspicious of people he didn’t know and could be incredibly paranoid. He only ever answered phone calls to numbers he could positively identify and hated having anyone in his home. In hindsight, ignorance was bliss. Now everything was out in the open; there was no going back. Part of me wished I was still clueless as to what was going on.

‘I love you so much. Please don’t leave me, Ella.’ Conor stepped towards me and wrapped his arms around me.

I was too emotionally invested in him to walk away now. I was genuinely infatuated by him. ‘If I stay, you need to be one hundred per cent straight with me from now on; no more secrets and no more lies.’

‘You have my word,’ Conor replied.

I had a feeling I was about to kiss my carefree existence goodbye, but instead of being frightened by the danger Conor’s way of life would inevitably bring, I was starting to feel intrigued by it.
