Chapter Nine: Face to Face

“Dad? Is that really you?” Nigel asked.

“Yes,” our father started, “and I know you and your sister must have many questions for me.”

“I am glad you are alive. I’ll admit I was worried, but I have nothing to say to you,” I spat, then turned my back to him and clenched my fist tightly. Why? Why would he show up now?

“Sister?” my brother asked.

I took a deep breath and turned around. I looked at my brother. I saw sadness, anger, happiness, and shock in his eyes. It was all the same emotions that I was feeling. Nigel and I looked back at our father, whom we had not seen in several years.

“Why? Why would you show up now!” I hollered in anger.

“I know that the both of you are feeling a bunch of emotions right now, and I know I have a lot to explain,” our father stated.

“You think? Because of you, Nigel and I lost Mom, we had to run. If we had not found Vipra and if she had not helped us, I do not know where Nigel and I had ended up,” I growled, anger seething through me as I gritted my teeth. I did not even notice that my brown eyes had changed to my snake eyes until my brother mentioned it.

“Nakita, your eyes,” my brother said.

I then took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and let them change back. When I reopened them, I looked back at my father.

“I know I left you and your brother alone, but I did my best to track you down. I never imagined that both of you would end up in my childhood home. I am glad that Vipra was the one that found you both,” our father started and looked at Vipra, gave her a small smile, and then turned back to my brother and me.

“How long have you known that we were alive?” Nigel asked our dad.

I also wanted to know how long he had known. Whether I forgave him or not depended on how long he knew.

Dad bit his lip and looked away from us at first. He sighed and then looked back at my brother and me. I could see the pain in his eyes from leaving us alone; my brother may forgive him easily, but I was a different story.

“Since both of you were fourteen,” my father said.

At that moment, I knew I could not forgive my dad so easily. Four years? He has known for four years that we are alive! How dare he decide to come back into our life now!

“And you have the audacity to return now!” I hollered and began to walk away.

“Nakita, wait!” our father cried.

“What for? I have nothing more to say to you,” I stated.

“Sister, let’s at least talk to Dad before you do anything rash,” Nigel said.

“I don’t want to talk to him,” I snarled with ire.

I began to walk away, but Nigel jumped in front of me, blocking my path. I looked at him with a stern look.
