Bobby Bear and Waldo had been listening to the arguing from inside. They couldn’t see what happened but they knew an unfriendly tone when they heard it. Waldo didn’t know what a jerkweed was. It sounded like a plant of some sort. He was sure it was an insult by the way Kurt spoke.
The laughter was back and Waldo realized that no one was in the house. He could slip over to the window to see what the commotion was. As soon as he moved an inch, Bobby Bear reached out and grabbed his arm. “What are you doing?” he said sharply.
“I just wanna take a peek,” replied Waldo, almost begging. “Do you hear that? That’s fun — that’s what that is, and I wanna see, don’t you?”
“Yes — I do — but not now. We just can’t. Not now,” pleaded Bobby Bear, still with a firm grip on his arm.
“Come on. We’ll just take a peek and then get right back. Simple,” said Waldo.
“You always say things are simple when they’re not.”
“Just a peek. You know you want to see, too.”
The two friends stared at each other, each one tense. Eventually, Bobby Bear relented. He always did. Waldo felt the grip relax and he slipped over to the window with Bobby Bear peering over his shoulder.
“What’s he doing?” asked Bobby Bear as they watched James wind up to throw another pitch.
“I don’t know.”
The ball flew out of James’ hand towards Bobbie. She swung the bat with all her might and hit it over his head yet again.
They heard Debra yell something.
“Did you see that?” cried Waldo. How could James do such a thing? “He tried to hit her with that ball.”
“I most certainly did,” answered Bobby Bear alarmingly. “If she didn’t have that stick she would’ve been . . .”
As Bobby Bear was talking, he and Waldo noticed James look towards the window.
“Uh-oh!” they said at the same time. Like a flash, they were back in their spots.
